Can you swim a Mile ?

Post by digitalfreefall »

I have been swimming a Mile a day (65 X 25meters) for the last week and have noticed a marked improvement in my all round fitness, running especially.
If you have access to a pool, get swimming, i only wish i had started sooner.

Yeah im 15 and use to swim for Cornwall. When we had training we had to do 2 MIles in 2 hours which is at a pretty slow pace, but is hard when your only 13. Swimming so many lengths 2 times a week got very boring.

Good Luck
Swimming is great but i prefer running now.

I havent been swimming in quite literally YEARS! I used to be a good strong swimmer though. I should probably start again, but maybe not as well... lol

But from what I hear it is a pretty nice tool for eaking up the fitness levels and due to the low resistance it reduces risk of injury yet also helps to build upper body strength.

A good all-rounder by the sounds of things, keep at it.

Good on you mate. I used to swim at lot as a nipper and did my 5000m badge at school  I am still more happy swimming than running so maybe I should have done RMR instead

You are right swimming will help build up many of your major muscle groups and be really good to help with endurance and stamina.

Im getting stronger every day, hope to get up to 5000 meters at some point.
Fair play it can be a bit boring but im happy to spend as much time in the pool/gym as it takes to get as fit as possible for my PRMC.
Anyone struggling with their training should at least give swimming a go, i have found it to be a great kickstart for PRMC readiness.

I got a certificate for swimming 2km just after I finished primary school. I'd just moved back from living in Spain for 5 years (where I swam all the time) so I was fit, but was on the cream cake diet. Proper hanging after I'd finished it.

Not quite a mile, but close.

Swimming pools disgust me, people pi$$ in them.

Seriously, though, it's excellent all around work out. Swimming, I mean.

Im a lifegaurd and I can barly swim. I cant even do front crawl. A swimming pool 25m long and 2.6 metres deep has about 1 inch of hair products, spit, p1ss and hair grease floating at the top of it depending on their filter but most are the same. So the only advise I can give to you is dont drink any of it. Of course it is safe to drink if you dont mind chorine because All the harmfull bacteria are killed in about 3 seconds.

Yep, I swim in outdoor ponds on Hamstead Heath, and I swear they are 100 times cleaner than swimming pools. In fact, some scientists did a water study of them a while back, don't know the exact results, but they were pronounced v healthy compared to normal swimming pools. And no sodding chlorine either!

No more than an hour swimming Breaststroke, i've only just started swimming again so i will get faster and change to the Crawl stroke (if thats what its called). To be honest im more interested in distance than time there are a few guys at the pool who swim like shit off a shovel but only do 20 laps.

There's a lot of rubbish written about getting infections from pools and the sea, I've swum a lot all over the world and never had a problem. But you *must* respect the sea, check the weather conditions before yet get in and check for currents and riptides. I nearly died trying to save a woman in thailand on a rubber ring, when I was trying to pull her back. Man that was close
