Shoulder Injury prior to POC 5th June
Shoulder Injury prior to POC 5th June
I'm looking for advice from guys that have done the POC. I've damaged some muscle and possibly the rotator cuff in my shoulder, it's quite painful and i'm having physio. My reps on the press-ups and pull-ups have obviously decreased. Basically i want to go down there no matter what, but i was just after the opinion of those who have been as to whether the beastings will be too much for someone carrying an injury. Will they send me home if they find out i'm injured? Equally will my RMFA score be good enough if i'm hitting level 13plus on the bleep, 80 sit-ups, but only around 30 press- ups and 8 pull-ups?
cheers guys

Watch yourself matey shoulder injuries can be extremely tricky. If you think you can handle it i say you should go but keep in mind if you damage it further before it's healed that could effectively end your career. I'd take the advice of your physio as gospel.TDB wrote:I'm looking for advice from guys that have done the POC. Your RMFA score should be good enough to pass day 1.
I think if you tell them you're injured then they might send you home, but really you would have just recovered from injury so there wouldn't be a problem.
You'll have to be careful though whilst you're there, I wouldn't advise fighting through the pain or popping pain killers as it could end in disaster. There was once a lad DWW on these forums who went down to fight through shin splints and now it is a chronic problem. So if I were you if there's any pain through exercise or any of the RoM I'd give it a miss.
I'd say depending how much RoM you have the rope slide may present a problem when you hit the bottom as your shoulders will get a bit of a jerk.
Also on the second confidence test I would lead with your strong arm, but that's common sense anyway.
The cheeky warm up and assault course shouldn't present much of a problem as you will be working in a fairly safe RoM for your shoulder.
Potentially the log race and exercises could aggravate your shoulder, but I had VW'd before them so I can't really say.
Hopefully someone who as actually completed the course might want to add to that.

I think it will only be a problem if you think of it as one- if you're capable of doing press ups and chin ups I'm sure your shoulder can get through the POC.
In response to Matt's comments, I think the log race wont be too demanding on your shoulder- the log isn't that heavy and your team mates will be helping you carry it. The only problem you might have will be with the log exercises which are performed on a monster of a log. You'll do some bicep curls and you'll be pressing the log above your head. Just remember when your doing it it only lasts 5 minutes tops- I think if your shoulder can get through that there won't be any other major problems- only a bit of crawling and some more press ups on day 2 and swimming on day 3.
All the best.

cheers Sonne, Matt, Doug and JCAP 3 & 4 (what's going on) - the advice is appreciated! My next physio session is thursday, i'll see what she says but probably going to rest it untill i go down. I really don't want to miss the POC - i applied April 05 - and having to wait untill Sept 07 to start may cause long-term damage of it's own. My main concern is passing day 1 - but i'm sure i'll be over it by then
I'm liking the ibuprofen a bit too much at the moment, plus they seem to be curbing my sense of humour - can't have that on a POC!
Bring on the logs!...

Yep, 6 miles. Only the last 3 miles are a clear run though, the first 3 is tunnels etc, hare and hounds, THEN a clear 3 miles. JCAP, you do know it's the MARINES you've applied for yes?
And NO, absolutely 100% NO visual aids for the presentation and it is 100% about YOU. Wouldn't worry about content mate, just speak clearly, with confidence, have a structure and crack a funny and you'll be fine.
