drugs and the marines

Post by old skool »

orite ppl been reading this forum for while now and most of my questions have already been asked and answered but i dont remember anything being sed bout drugs:

am currently at uni and plan to join corp when im finished and admittedly i dabble in certain chemicals now and agen:what i was wondering was what is the RMs take on drugs?

i know you probably get tested and will probably get rejected if found positive but what if you stop using when you join the corp is it still frowned upon?and does it hamper your chances of getting in if you declare youve done them before in the past?

i also know that although its not allowed that doesnt mean it doesnt go on-does anyone know to what extent it goes on in the marines and what drugs are used?i dont smoke weed anymore and dont do coke, but may in the future have a few pills now and agen on a nite out :o , which is out of your system in a day or two anyway.

i know drugs are not a good idea especially when wanting to join the marines and obviously dont help with your training, but my point of view is that the RM social life is very much centered around getting bladdered most of the time and that the top brass accept the drinking culture, and to me this is no different from drugs as alcohol of course is a drug-to me most ppl who go out and drink 9/10 pints get in a much worse state than me on a few pills so wheres the harm?

any feedback will be appreciated thanx

once u fill in the form never take drugs again, its a zero tolerance policy.

a) drugs are bad for you and can kill you
b) they dont help your fitness

some of my friends 'dabble' and they are fools, i know 2 people messed up in the head via cannabis alone. why take them? no point, drink lots instead.

a) drink is bad for you and can kill you aswell
b) and it doesnt help your fitness either

by zero tolerance does that mean your immediately thrown out if you get caught?

I agree that too much of anything is bad for you but drugs NO!! Apart from the fact there are drug testing programmes and you could get kicked out (and all the work you put in goes to dust) what about if you took drugs and a mate was injured as a consequence... how could you explain this to you mate's family. Don't think about yourself think about the honour of your regiment and keeping those around you safe. MFAT

its a good point but;

the main difference between beer and crack is that beer does not mess up your head as much unlike other drugs which is not what you want in an organisation like the armed forces.

this is a snippet from the bit i got with my rm application form:

5. Once you have joined the armed forces you must not misuse drugs - you are required to stay clear of drugs and association with any drug users or supliers. once you have joined the forces you will be liable by law to random compulsory drug testing throughout your career. if these tests confirm your involvement, with very few exceptions, you will be discharged.

why they frown upon it can be found here:

mate if your serious about joining you would stay off the stuff now, keep clean then apply and you wont have any problems when you join. No point in ruining your career over a pill.

If you read the policy thing, it says they understand that young people nowadays are influenced in trying and experimenting with drugs, that doesnt matter to them so long as it was just a phase, they have a no tolerence for drug abuse.
So if you wanna join stay away from them, and mates who still do them if it shows up in a drug test .. you can standby.

You might want to snip the text lingo and start using correct English as the general concensus on the forum is that text speak is forbidden.

I'm sure in the Royal Marines you'll opt for drinks with your oppo's rather then 'reaching for the lazers' like some sort of hippy.

Pills are mental masturbation for cretinous dancers, wouldn't you rather read a book or do some exercise?

In the time I was at Lympstone I was tested twice. If you get caught with any drugs in your system you will be discharged and at home within 24 hours. They will send your belongings to you.

If you want to join the corps stop doing drugs and exercise instead. You don't want to make life any more difficult than it is going to be.
Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming... 'F*ck, what a trip!'

I personally dont think you should even contemplate joining the Marines if you think it would be ok to take pills.

Zero Tollerance.

As a Former Royal Marine SNCO I can assure anyone reading this that if I ever caught a guy using Illegal Drugs his farking feet would not touch the deck!!!  As a JNCO I caught two blokes sharing the same grot smoking the weed in NI once. Out on their arses and six months detention. No mess Tins.

As a Bootneck you want the blokes in front, behind and around you to have totally clear heads. The thought of some smackhead weaving around behind you talking to the trees with a loaded Weapon does not bear thinking about.

i think your all missing the point here-i for one would certainly never take anything that would put my fellow marines at risk because my head wasnt clear-i wouldnt even contemplate taking anything at the time of going out on exercises or something that would still be in my system.i was just wondering seen as most marines take the drug that kills the most people each year in abundance, if any of them do anything else like when on leave and at home for a period of time?im not a smack-head/dirty druggie
