Firefighter Interview

Post by o.j.m »

Hello all,
I have an interview at my local afco next week. Any info on this would be great. I've done a search and found information on the specialist interview but not the first interview. Good Luck messages also greatly received.

No worries.

My interview started with my forms being checked as it was over six months ago that I initially filled them out I had to do a new set. After the normal checking and photocopying of documents. I was taken through to the interview room. The interview followed a pattern; I will try to recall it in the right order.
* Family Background , responsibilities you had or have at home, information on your parents, how you get on with your family, if you have a partner- how serious it is.
* Educational Background , dates and place of your education, your marks, your responsibilities at school, how you got on with your teachers
* Employment history, starting with your jobs from leaving school giving your role, responsibilities, salary, promotion prospects and your reason for leaving
* The RAF , what you know about the training, the rank structure, the pay, your chosen trade, where are the deployments, how you feel about drug testing and the RAF code of conduct
* Yourself, what was the worst time in your life, what was the best, experiences of clubs sport and other, fitness levels, experience of dorm like living conditions, travel, how would you your partner or family feel about you going on detachments
* Motivation, your motivation to join the Raf and your chosen trade, how you would feel carrying and firing weapons, what you could bring to your trade and finishing asking if you have taken any drugs ect.

Hope it helps someone. Advice I would give would be honest, i know that has been said allot. But the same questions are repeated in other ways to catch you out. So tell the truth! The Corprol made me feel very relaxed and I enjoyed the interview. Was told if I didn’t hear for a while that no news is good news.

I must have given the right answers as I have been asked to go for a medical. After all this waiting it is all happening so quickly. I can't wait for the selection weekend to show them what I can do.. :D

Well passed all the tests, but have decided against it all as I have been accepted in the civilian fireservice. It's just a pity that the RAF pay is so poor.. :( Good luck to all

Hi o.j.m.,

I notice, from reading this thread, that you've been accepted into the fire service. I have also been accepted into my local fire service (South Wales). There are recruit courses timetabled for Sept & Jan, but I won't know until 2 months before, which course I'll be on & they've said that there's a possibility I won't get on either of the 2 courses beacuase there might not be enough places on the courses, even though I've passed. As a result of this possibility they have advised me to re-apply when the next recruitment campaign comes around, because you can't stay on the recruits list for more than a year. This is worrying me a little because I've completed all their tests & it's involved months of waiting & now I've passed there's more waiting & the possibility of not even starting. I was just wondering is this the case with your local fire brigade ??.

“Better pay and you can go on strike!! " Nice post macster really y helpfull!
Taffy without going into it too much. There are no guarantees with the Fireservice anymore, there are lots of changes and the budget is responsible for most of them. Every Brigade is different and there are lots of people on shortlists and waiting lists. I have tried to get in for the passed 6 years now and finally got my start date letter.
What I would suggest is apply to all the brigades that you are prepared to work at and take comfort that you passed all the tests that were put in front of you.

All the best.
