advice please

Post by Cdt Cooper »

Start off. I am colourblind, most people in this forum will have heard this already and i appologise but seen as though different people may have different oppinions and knowledge, i figured why not ask the best of the best oof the best our marines.
right, once again i am colourblind easiest way to describe how colourblind i am is that i can see all the colours you put in front of me exactly the same as you do but i cannot differenciate between shades and i cannot tell which colour is which. if you dont understand don't worry, my mum still doesn't. the big question is can i still be in the marines, or indeed the airforce. pls can you tell me soon as i am quickly losing all hope of being able to join up in 9 years time(im almost 14 you see). I am quite capable of doing anything else as a career such as computer work or writing etc(although you may not have guesseed by my appaling gramatical skills shown so far!) but since being a baby i have always dreamed of being one of those men you see on TV, the ones that computer games and films are made of, protecting my country and team at all costs even if it means my life. another eason for wanting to join up is that i would hate to be stuck behind a desk for the rest of my life. another final question is that i am gifted with computers and fixing things and am a pretty good shot (tested this out by waiting for hours, still with my mate, a flak of tea and a g10 air pistoil waiting for the largest pigeon i could nail between the eyes)(by the way i got it). could any of these factors help me to get in.
sorry for the long rambling post but ...
answers would be very much appreciated by anyone othered enough to read this post lol.

Many items of that you use in forces are colour coded, and much of it can be deadly, if you can't tell what colour it is how can you safely use it. You are not only going to risk your life but lifes of your friends.

It depends on what trade etc you are going for! Electrician or anything at sea then it has to be a no. You have to be able to know the difference between red and green lights... the same goes for aviation so flying etc is out as well. As a sniper or rifleman you would have to be able to see the difference in woods and combat pattern material so that is out. Bomb disposal... wires... no. You could be a risk to yourself but more importantly a risk to those you are serving with... I'm not being harsh, just realistic. It may not be a problem to you in daily life but the one time it could be a problem is when others are relying on you.

There are colour blind servicemen/women it just depends how badly you are affected as to what you'll be allowed to do.

Go and see the recruitment office and take the test then you'll know for sure.

I don't know enough about it, but if quality and speed is jeprodised by someone being colour blind. Then no. But i'm sure there are exceptions.

This goes back to the whole disability question really. In general, it depends if the colourblindness inhibits a persons ability to do the job; given the reliance on vision wich is required throughout the forces, the standard is higher than it might be elsewhere and by the sounds of it you would probably be unable to safely do the job (bear in mind everyone in the forces has to be a soldier first, so if you can't do that you're buggered). But you might not be that bad, the only way to find out is to ask your AFCO and see what they say.

Cdt Coops, it is at this point that certain members of the forums will be pissing themselves laughing and asking if not the clarinet, how about joining and playing the pink oboe? Dolly Dolman should be able to advise you on that one. 8)

Now that Liverpool have cheated somehow, and beaten Geordie Land in the 2008 'lovely city' competition, I'm not prepared to give you any advice.

How do they know the colour of the car they've just pinched?!! :o

No wonder they go through red traffic lights up there!

How the hell did these people WIN. :-?

Steve, there is a very good response to your 4th point, written by olly Scarrott to one of our members. He had received a complaint about a joke he sent in which referred to a disabled person. The complaint was understandable, but Olly pointed out that our lives, in and out of the Services, were made easier by laughing at adversity and making fun of our own situations, however dire they may be. This is Black Humour at it's finest. Everybody, without exception, regrets your situation, but as stated, there are jobs for which you will be accepted within the forces. This is vastly better than 30 years ago, when you would not get beyond the medical test.
Do yourself a favour, go to your AFCO and ask what is available.

So, there is no need to make threats about hacking into anybodys computer. Unless of course you wish to leave the forums.
