fitness for recruit training

Post by Dave_n »

Alright lads, I've haven't trained for 4 weeks sinse i passed my PRMC because i had shin splints and i have been letting them recover.

What I want to ask is, after having 4 weeks off, how long do you think it will take me to get back to the level i was at?? (If it helps, I'm 17 years old...)

Im not worried about it, just curious so I can plan my training properly.

Cheers

A PTI friend of mine once said that missing a weeks fitness training is in effect equal to missing 2.

You lose a week of getting fitter, and add a week of "unfitness"

So if you have lost 4 weeks, by his estimation your looking at 4 to get back to where you were, and 8 to where you would have been had you not been injured.

Persoanlly I would just ease back into it and get your injury used to exercise again, dont push it or else you wil back on the stretcher.

cheers doc, well as long as i am back where i was then that will do. I'm planning on easing myself back in over 2 weeks, and then after that just doing the schedule i had before PRMC.

Any other opinions?

cheers

Hey Doc,

Hope you are having a productive weekend.

I'm afraid i'm having a problem getting my head around your 'loss of fitness' theory:

What if, in the week that i was due to be training, i'd planned on working out twice as hard as the week before i was 'off'? Would i lose one week, two or three?

Also, what if i didnt fancy working out that week - and was only going to put 50% effort into my workouts, am i better off skipping a week and working out at 200% effort the forth week? What if i'm ill that week - i'll have lost 8 weeks fitness in two weeks! And i'm not even ill yet.

I hope you can work this out for me before tomorrow (a.m) as i'm either going to be throw a sickie or rig up the flux capacitor to my Hillman Imp.

Speak soonest.

My mate in training said that you dont have to be PRMC fitness for the start of recruit training, but do a lot of swimming as you will do tons of that.

Well that would make sense, marines and all

I always got taught that if you did have a decent base of fitness it shouldnt take you horrific amounts of time to get back to fitness, certainly when i dislocated my knee and lost THREE MONTHS i didnt feel like id lost Six months of fitness, i was back at my original fitness in about a couple of weeks

I have had two months off, due to injury with the odd run/jog here and there.
I started back properly last Sunday and can feel the fitness returning with every run, although the first couple were horrendous.

Yeh i heard you wont be doing anything has hard as PRMC in the first few weeks because they want to build you up progressively in recruit training and not chuck you in the deep end like on PRMC.

its called reversability and its basicaly you either use your fitness or lose it and you lose it twice as fast as it took you to gain it shame eh?.

saying that taking 1-2 weeks of every now and again will do you no harm in fact it can be really productive i take 1 weeks complete rest in every 8 and find that when i get back to training i can work that little bit harder and make gains when before i may have been plateauing (due to muscle fibres and central nervous system having a chance to fully recuperate) and this is known as periodisation big words eh does the job grab a cookie slothster oot

i agree with sloth in concern to losing fitness twice as fast as it takes to gain it in the first place. i trained for 18 months roughly prior to prmc to gain a decent level of fitness. since passing prmc i spent the first 3 to 4 weeks celebrating going out on the lash more and more whilst at the same time only doing enough phys to keep me ticking over. as i have only got two weeks monday untill i start recruit training ive recently threw myself back into full time training and my overall fitness level has dropped dramatically. i was really shocked to find that runs which i had found mildly challenging previously are now difficult for me to even finish. really struggling to get back on top before i head off to lympstone! :-?

dont go to hard if you've had time off.

I can feel my fitness improving already, Im going for 1 more week of taking it easy(ish) and then for the last 3 weeks i will train mon-fri like i was doing for PRMC.
