Tactical Air Control Parties

Post by jester »

hello, i was reading through the RAF Regiments website and i came accross the TACPs. I was wondering if anyone would be able to explain to me what their role is? Are they similar to the Army's 148 Cdo Forward Observation Battery?
thanks for any help!

TACP's I believe are Responsible for co-ordinating and directing close air-support aircraft and guys from the RAF Regiment sometimes do this job for the Marines and Army. I think 148 is long range surveillance/targeting but i think they only co-ordinate artillery for the R.A. So similar job but different tactics in killing the buggers. This website might help http://www.raf.mod.uk/jfactsu/csedetails.html

The RAF Regiment currently supplies the manpower for the 3 TACPs within 16 Air Assault Brigade, as well the OC for 2 other TACPs within other Brigades. The RM man the TACPs within 3 Commando Brigade, although the Brigade Air Liaison Officer is an RAF Regt Flt Lt.

The role of the TACP is usually to work alongside the infantry, normally at Company level, directing close air support. Although a TACP can be part of an advance force, units such as Pathfinder Platoon and RM Brigade Patrol Troop have their own integral Forward air Controllers. A TACP will also provide air advice to the local commander, particularly on fires deconfliction.

A TACP comprises 4 men, usually a Officer, SNCO and 2 ORs. Their kit will normally comprise a Laser Target Designator, Laser Range Finder & GPS, UHF/VHF/HF and TacSat comms, plus personal weapons, night vision devices, etc, etc.

148 Bty's role is that of forward observation, in particular naval gunfire support. However, they have a number of FACs and can therefore co-ordinate conventional artillery, mortars, NGS and CAS.

When I was in 3 CDOBDERM in the mid seventies one of the TACP's Officers was a Flt Lt Rutter. A Great Guy with a wicked sense of humour. a Harrier pilot by trade.

Once in Sardinia he decided that the Yank Navy Pilots were dropping their bombs a Tad to close for comfort. So off we went like shit off a shiney shovel in our trusty FFR, leaving all our stores and personal kit left where it was. After the Yanks had finished we returned only to find they had blown our 9x9, our trailer and everything else to kingdom come.

Rutter the Nutter was blazing! We were non to happy either. All we had left was the clothes we were standing up in. Old Rutter had bought a ruck of Lima Toy trains from the Desi de marini (Spelling) RAF camp NAAFI for his son and wacked in a chit demanding that the USN compensate him for their loss! We told him he should have bought his son some TONKA toys as they were indestructable. :D :D
