Potential Officers visit to 42 Commando

Post by SpooK »

Earlier this year I went for my first interview with the Royal Marines and there they asked me whether I would be interested in visiting one of the commando units later on in the year. Well, I got a pack in the post this week inviting me to a 3 day thing with 42 Commando in Portsmouth.

It lists the kind of stuff that i'll be taking part in: shooting range, rockclimbing, basic fieldcraft (all the kind of things ive been doing in Cadets  for years). The only thing i'm a little concerned about is the physical training sessions that are going to be there. I'm 16 and i've only just started gym training in the past 6 moinths. The physical sessions are to see how fit (or unfit ;)) you are. I'm slightly concerned that i'm going to embarase myself infront of all the 18 year olds that are going to be there who have been training for a good couple of years and are looking at going on the PRMC in the near future. I, on the other hand, am looking at joining the RM after Uni and that so it's not in the near future.

I was just wondering if any of you had an insight into these physical sessions and whether I should be at all concerned about them :P I can easily hold my own body weight. Being realistic, 30 pressups in one go and 50 situps. 10 Pullups at one go at best

Spook,

While I cannot talk from first hand experience (with regards to the 3 day taster) I will say this..

I have had a few beastings from RM's while on my college course, and no matter how fit you are, they will break you, when they visited, I was one of the fittest in my class, and boy did they make me know it.

One thing I have notived about the RM's is this (and feel free to correct me) while you need to be fit.. anyone can be fit, do you have the mental strength to sit there and smile and ask for seconds, when all you want to do is pass out/throw up/collapse? Thats what the RM's appreciate.

One of the lads on our course is rather 'big boned' he struggled on everything, but we all supported him, Marines included because he gave it his best, he went at it balls out all the way, and his pushup score was worse than yours. While I've seen other lads that are twice as fit as me start whinging and moaning as soon as everything starts to hurt. For christ sake do not say 'I cant do it'.

Dont worry about your fitness mate, just get in there with a good attitude and enjoy the experience. They will remember you more for your attitude rather than your fitness, because thats what makes a Marine a Marine.

All the best mate, and keep us posted on how it goes!

Aye,
Rock

PS: Ten pull ups in one go isnt that bad (mine is prob only 12 when tired), run a search on the forum for tips to improve your pushups, or feel free to PM me.
A great quote from the "Destination: D-Day" series:

"Right, you've done the hard bit, now make it look easy"

Desire. Grit. Determination. Victory.
