They had no chance,Despite the victory of the RAF in 1940.
Without daylight bombing by the US 8th Airforce the Germans would have been able to re-build the Luftwaffe and mount an invasion of the UK which the British could not have repelled.

That Channel 4 list is crap. Who would put a silly musical (Oh, What a Lovely War) or a cartoon (When the Wind Blows) ahead of the Colditz Story?

I saw Kelly's Heroes (34) when it first came out and thought it was the best thing since sliced bread.

Dirty Dozen (27) was excellent, as was Where Eagles Dare (21), the Longest Day (20), and Dambusters (11). Zulu (8) was outstanding, too, and A Bridge Too Far (7) is probably my number two. But by far my all-time fave is The Great Escape (3). We used to watch that every Christmas in our house. Appart from Christmas dinner, it was the highlight of the day (along with the Magnificent Seven and True Grit all on the same day...every year)!

Also damned good, but conspicuous by their absence are:

1. Sea of Sand (about the LRDG inN Africa (Richard Attenborough)) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0051532/); and

2. The Odd Angry Shot (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079652/).


Saving Ryan's Private's was a excellent movie, but a bit graphic for my nippers yet. At least with Great Escape we can watch it together.

Mind you, there's some absolute crap in the C4 list, too. Some of them aren't even real war films - more like tree hugger views on war - and they put them ahead of good old movies? What bollocks!

Gods and Generals was a cracker, as was its prequel whos name escapes me....was it Gettesburg???? top films!

The film of the great escape was not very good in my humble opinion once youve read the book its quite funny one of the characters in it has appeared in another film pearl harbour!

The Oz view on Gallipolli is so biased as to be a joke. Apart from a few British stereo-typical blimp occifers, the ANZAC were the only ones there Corps Birthday Dinner, two years since, had me as M.C. My theme for the Evening was Royal`s involvement in Oz history. We had twelve guys from Oz SAS as guests and they were stunned to hear the things I was saying. Little things, you know. Like Royal was first in and last out at Gay lipoli and Mell "can`t act for toffee" Gibson was not really there.
Having said that, I didn`t realise the Digs were at Kangaw till I came down here.
Very selective, is our view of history. It, naturally, tends to focus on British events. Hollywood is run by people who have other interests at heart. That`s why you`ll never see them do a movie about Malaya, Cyprus or the Falklands.
