From what I've read, some people couldn't run half a mile if they were smoking, and others could get 13 on a bleep test straight after having a ciggie, then light up afterwards. Nonetheless, it doesn't take a PhD to realise that it is much easier to get fit, keep fit, and attain higher levels of fitness if you aren't smoking regularly.

The only important question is how YOU perform while smoking.

PS: Gave up before I started training, so if you do...don't believe the nicotinell ads, all the accepted wisdom, and the American you-will-always-be-an-addict crap. You don't have to be a monk about it - if you can have, and want, the occasional cigarette without starting up fulltime again, it is not going to hurt you too much...reminding yourself every day that "you are a nicotine addict" is more likely to get you started again than just forgetting about it!

Smoking is v easy to give up. Do it cold turkey. After 3 days the majority of the physical addiction will have gone. After 2 weeks, it will be completely out of your system. If you have a REASON to quit and stay quit, along with even the tiniest bit of willpower, then it is no problem. PRMC is a pretty good reason, and if you don't have the required willpower to stop smoking, then the Royals probably aren't for you anyway!

When i wanted to stop smoking to train for my PRMC i just thought to myself, what do you want to do live a long healthy life doing the job you've been dreaming of? Or carry on smoking get all yellow skin, bad breath, rotted teeth and die a young age of lung cancer?? :o

As you can guess i haven't touched a fag in 2 years now, and i have a lot more money these days for them extra rounds on nights out :D

However i was suprised at how many people i saw smoking down at CTC on my PRMC, so it is possible to do training while smoking, but at the end of the day you're the only one who can choose what to do.

I have been told by a Phyisical Trainer that smoking only effects fitness by 5%, so you could be 5% fitter if you stop.

my flatmate's boyfriend failed his PRMC recently, he blamed smoking, but what actually happened was he kept saying i cant possible go running as a smoker, or exercise etc etc, so i'll quit first then start, he waited so long faffing about trying to quit, that by the time he had, he didnt have enough time to prepare for PRMC so he failed. Basically what i'm saying is that the fact you're a smoker doesnt stop you exercising, in fact back when i smoked, I found that it helped me stop, you go for a nice long run, come back, feel refreshed, get a drink sit down and relax, then you spark up and you get this tired groggy drained feeling, which is not pleasant, in the end i just quit through being healthy enough to feel the effect on my body, the attractiveness soon vanishes then...

but seriously, get your trainers on and out for a run you go, worry about smoking some other time....

Im a smoker so ignore if you wish

I aint preacher wether you do or not but it was described to me once like this (not that it did much good, I did quit for 3 years but started again during my divorce)

Imagine driving a formula one car with a prestine engine but using diesel!

As you train the toxins from ciggies are pushed around the body harder, so in some repects could do more harm. Obvioulsy if you get a smoking related illness then the fitter you are the better, but some of it rings true.

At the end of the day fitness depends on lungs and their efficacy in transfering oxygen to the blood and CO2 out of it, if you clod your lungs up with smoke and tar then that efficacy is reduced. Your blood is also clogged up with toxins and its your blood that feeds the muscles and transports waste away.

When your young your body copes, but believe me doing the fan today I suffered and i blame the ciggies!

Will I quit again............writing this and realising the shite Im putting into my body you bet ya!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont agree with the 5% quoted , if you loose a lung through smoking your going to suffer by more than 5% :o

Plenty of blokes in depot Para smoke. One of my corporals is a smoker, and he is one of the fittest blokes in ITC Catterick.

All it takes is will power to quit, and with exercise you wont ever see the point in smoking again.

The thing i would be worried about if i was a smoker, is not smoking whilst in the forces because you are contantly keeping your fitness at a top level. But imagine after you leave the RM/Army whatever, and you stop doing the fitness and living that healthy lifestyle, yet you are still smoking and with time your fitness will go, leaving you with a body full of shite :D
