Breaking in combat boots

Post by mike_neon »

obviously every one that passes the PRMC gets there combat boots to wear in for training. How many miles would you class as comfortably wearing them in. I have probably walked equivalent of 12-15 miles in mine. They seem fine now, what does every one else do?

There are 3 kinds of people: those who can count & those who can't.

I would search mate, like Rab said, its been discussed before on numerous occasions.

But I believe boots in hot water for 30mins then on your feet seem to do the trick.

Again someone complains about a question asked on a f*cking forum of all places! Lighten up for f@#k sake!

You must start by wearing them for a small distance and gradually extend the walks/runs that you carry out. By no means be take new boots and go out for a long walk in them as you should always break them in over a period of time. It is often easier to avoid rubbing or blister trouble. A piece of elastoplast (if that’s how ya spell it) or Second Skin if put on early on should hopefully prevent a basta*d blister forming...which ya don’t want.

The stiffer the boot, the more break-in time that is gonna be necessary. You should be able to also use some form of leather conditioner to soften pressure points in the boots (so i heard). If you plan on carrying a Bergen, break-in your boots on numerous walks first, then start wearing your Bergen afterwards. Make sure that you wear your Bergen as part of your boot break-in process too!!.

Hope that helps

Mike, take them down town, ask a local Carlsberg guzzler to piss in them, then get him to put them on and kick your arse down the street for not using the search function.

Wear them until they're comfortable all day. Decent socks, some anti-fungal talc all over your feet, and between the toes; and a dab of vaseline along your achilles tendon will make life easier.
You should talk to somebody who gives a f**k.

Wear them in the bath :) no joke!! thats what i was told when I was breaking in boots and it works well as it softens leather and them moulds to the shape of your foot. Kep them on while there wet when you get out and then elave them to dry after that.
Try wearing them to the Clubs etc.. to get as much use out of them as possible, the ladies will love it!

p.s. The wearing them in the bath is a good idea, but clubs.... only if you cant afford a pair of shoes.

I went on a 20 mile hike the weekend after PRMC in my boots, nothing strenuos but i hardly suffered at all, had a couple of tiny blisters forming about half way, stuck a bit of tape on them and they were fine. I love my boots their well comfortable. I also thought the boots we got for bottom field were really comfortable as well, i prefered running in them than running in my trainers.

Didn't use any tricks for my boots just wore them alot

I find putting them in a fenced off paddock attached to a length of rope is a good way.

Begin by patting them and putting them at ease, then whispering into them with a soft tone in your voice. Once they trust you, jump into them and try and keep upright as they go ballistic all over the place. You'll look like John Cleese with epilepsy for a few minutes until you finally break them in.

When you get to the real world you can go and buy a pair of scarpas, lush boots that bite a bit on the roof of your foot until they soften, but then they are like walking in slippers and blister free. Just get some Yeti gaiters aswell so the SM thinks your in issued boots if hes one of them that thinks issue boots are great for yomping in all day.

When at CTC doing the PRMC thingy see if you can buy a second hand pair from the g1098 store. (the place where all kit is issued) but make sure it's a civvy storeman you ask and not the C/Sgt in charge or any Jenny Wren. If theres a 3 badge Marine behind the counter you could also ask him. Cross the storemans palm with silver and you should be onto a winner.

They will have been broken in by a Recruit who's wrapped his hand in and should fit your feet like a glove after a couple of days of you wearing them when you get back home. But to repeat what I said earlier, make sure the C/Sgt or the Jennies are not around. It's also a good place for other kit but it's up to you just how Brassnecked you feel on the day.

some lads probably wont agree with this but if you put your boots in the bath and mould them to your feet you are gonna suffer on yomps and speed marchs as your feet swell when doing phys of that extent.
you want it bad enough, you will get it.
