maybe I did go a bit overboard, but im tired of hearing people talk shit about countries that have nothing to do with the US's problems, mainly Americans which hate: Canada, France, England...wait all other countries actually.... even though it was meant as a joke I did not find it apropriate in a post which talks about the French Foreign Legion an army who...unlike many KNOW what disciple is. If you manage to talk shit about france in front of a legionaire and survive il quiet down...just my 2 cents

I can relate to an extent (see my profile), except maybe I have thicker skin. A few things to bear in mind: most people take the piss out of most other people, in France, southerners take the piss out of northerners and vice versa, the French make a lot of jokes about Belgians, Germans, Italians, Arabs, blacks, etc.

Been going on forever. As to the Legion, this is just my opinion, well I've worked with some of them on and off when in Corsica. The 2nd REP and the GCP do not represent the whole of the Legion by a long shot.
They have their flakes just like everyone else, and overall I don't see them as any better than British paras or RM. There's a lot of misconception due to books, movies, etc.
You got to realize that the French military is rather tight lipped and not all that well known even by the French. I suspect this is slowly changing since they no longer have the draft: there have been websites about the Legion for some time now, but next to nothing about the 44th infantry, the air force CPA, the 13th RDP or even the French Marines.
So in that context, both pejoratives and fantasies tend to flourish.
Talking shit about France in front of a Legionnaire? We used to, and once in a while you'd run into some flake with a white kepi who'd want to fight it out (thinking he was right hard) and got his a$$ kicked. Typically, a French kid who'll never ship out outside of France and Corsica.

Now, nothing's been said on this thread which is truly derogatory or insulting to France. Believe me if someone has beefs, it'd be me, I have a laundry list of justified complaints.
France is big enough (though not as big as she thinks she may be) to take it.
True, there's been a truckload of mud flung in the last three years, mostly between the US and France, some of it nasty (and from both sides), but...

I and most of the French have never forgotten the debt of blood to the UK and the US this past century. They have their jokes and we sure as hell got ours, but we'd still sit down for a brew and get along.
