If we had to loose the National Anthem as it is and choose another I would vote for 'Jerusalem'.
And did those feet in ancient times, walk upon England's
The British National Anthem is the only National Anthem that the words are all about the Monarch, all other anthems are about how great the country is. So our anthem is unique in one way. The tune is also the same as two other countries (one of them is a european country but the name escapes me at the moment) so we could do with another tune if it was needed. Our Anthem is world famous, recognised throughout the world and has been around for a long time so why change it?

Ah, Jerusalem, the only (proper) song I ever learnt the words to. Granted that was because I was ordered to as an air cadet (/Me dons tin helmet and waits for torrent of abuse and derision), but the point remains
. However I do hope no-one does a serious poll about the issue, as these days we'd probably end up with some kind of Robby Williams dribble as a national athem
.
Fluffy bunnies - Grrrrr!
Yes when they were deciding on a new anthem here one of the favourites was Waltzing Matilda. It's a good oz song but not for an anthem.
I belonged to the Womens Institute when I lived in Uk and their song is Jerusalem which I love but it is hard to sing with no backing and alot of timid women.

Jackal obviously we do have some unwanted here, who doesn't but since we took a stand against the boat people about 18 months ago the problem is far less than it was. We didn't win any popularity contests but who cares. I think it's safe to say we do not have the problem you have over there and I don't see how it will improve over there either

May the sun always shine on you.

Ahoy there!
There may be better and more appropriate tunes/songs that could be used as the National Anthem; but the point is that 'God Save the Queen' IS the National Anthem. So what if it bangs on about the Monarch.
There have been suggestions recently to replace St George as the patron Saint of England. Why?
Then what? Change the English flag? Then the Union Flag?
Actions that I believe would seriously undermine the fabric of the British identity. Then again maybe that's what they are trying to achieve.
As I said in a previous thread.

European Integration followed by Global Integration; that is the only way forward as far as I'm concerned. If we don't embrace this concept then Great Britain will surely become politically and socially isolated.
So here are my proposals to ensure a better world:
1. A single head of state - HM The Queen.
2. One flag to represent the world - The Union Flag.
3. A single currency - The Pound, Sterling.
4. One Government - Parliament, HMG.
5. Rationalisation of weights measures etc - Introduce the Imperial system and teach everyone to drive on the left hand side of the road.
6. A single language - English.
7. A new corporate name for the world - Great Britain.
Now that's the sort of unification I could vote for.
All in favour say AYE!

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn anwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol rhyfelwyr, gwlad garwyr tra mad,
Tros ryddid collasant eu gwaed.
Chorus:
Gwlad, gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad,
Tra mor yn fur
I'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r heniaith barhau.
Hen Gymru fynyddig, paradwys y bardd,
Pob dyffryn, pob clogwyn, i'm golwg sydd hardd;
Trwy deimlad gwladgarol, mor swynol yw si
Ei nentydd, afonydd, i mi.
Chorus:
Gwlad, gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad,
Tra mor yn fur
I'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r heniaith barhau
Os treisiodd y gelyn fy ngwlad dan ei droed,
Mae hen iaith y Cymry mor fyw ag erioed,
Ni luddiwyd yr awen gan erchyll law brad,
Na thelyn berseiniol fy ngwlad

Our national anthem is fine, it’s strong and powerful, where as the French one is way to flamboyant, if anyone understands what I mean!?!?! Plus it fits the French down to the ground and is over done, as is the American national anthem.
Being a rugby player I believe that we should adopt swing low sweet chariot. When you get 40,000 people singing that it's stirring to say the least. Always feel extremely patriotic when I hear it...
Does anyone else get goose bumps when they hear our national anthem being sung the way its meant to be, and by that I don’t mean football players humming along to the words because they don’t know them...
Ill shut up now
