Learning a second language with the RM
Learning a second language with the RM
Hello,
Does someone know if, as Royal Marine, I will be able to go on a course to learn a second language? Does the RM train translators?
Thanks.
Jesse

Don't fprget you can become an EW specialist and within this there is Y Troop, where your entire role will revolve around Languages, Intercept, translation, Interigation etc, for those who know him General (Graham) Paton was part of the NATO Arm Inspection team as an Interpretor he was a Booty (technically is for a couple more weeks...) his web site is

Jesse if you are dying to get another language there is no need to get lessons, you could start now by buying Berlitz language tapes/CDs and Course books (Your local library might even have them for free).
Obviously this takes alot of self disciple but it is very possible to aquire beginner to intermediate levels very quickly (6months!). Presumably if you were applying to RM evidence of self inniative and another language to boot would go a long way.

Ahoy there!
As the UK strides towards greater cooperation and union with Europe, I believe that it is imperative that we forge closer bonds with the peoples of the continent.
To that end I would like to promulgate the only words that you will ever need to know to ensure one big happy European family:
Achtung! Hande hoch! Schnell! Schnell!
Excuse the spelling but I trust you get my drift.

I learnt French in the south of France when I was 15, we lived in the South West for nine months, there were no teenagers who spoke English so I had to learn the language, the only problem was that the area was akin to Jordie land in UK, so I had a one hell of an accent.........
Some years later while with the Grey Funnel Line we visited St Nazaire (Campbelltown Raid)... twas the 25th anniversary of the raid.
Believe it or not there were only four of us who had enough conversational French to get by, and only one was a Wooooooopert....... as you can imagine I had a great time...... Plenty of Up Homers and Red Wine
Sad to say that although I can read french a bit I've not spoken it for a while, but I guess that it would all come back if the need arose

Jesse, I too did the Norwiegian Language course at Highbury Technical College in Pompey, although I didn`t know why I had put in for the course, as the first three weeks I couldn`t grasp it at all, then whilst driving back to Tampax Towers at Eastney Barracks, I started to translate what they were talking about on the Radio, thought I was ready for Nettely, but the best bit was when I went back to Norway, especially when ashore, and due to the high prices of the wets, I always used to order them, but never paid, as I always stitched up the Lads I was with, best thing was, they never sussed it,
so it definately pays to speak another language
