Mininum standards of fitness and my fitness routine

Post by Fat Man »

Hi i live in Australia and looking to join Britsh Army, just recieved my info pack and but cant seem to find any actual standards of fitness just to get into basic training, found some info on this forum but it doesnt seem to be clear?

1.5m/2.4 km run in 10 - 14min?

50 push ups?

50 sit ups?

Seems to me i have a bit more work than i first though, as you can see from my name.

I've had a fitness routine for a few months now walking, cycling, push ups situps and treadmill(fast walking) lost about a stone and gave up junk food and my favourite drink, Milk :drinking:

Now i weight 85kg at 168cm and i'm 24 the bmi says i'm obese, i know the bmi is not the only consideration but most if not all the excess weight is fat, from the bmi http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm it says my ideal body weight is about 54 -71, having a large body strucure i would say the higher weight is practicle than aiming for the low..

I've attempted running before but found it hard going but i relise i'll have to overcome this to get to my goal.

I'll try to keep a diary of my progress....

Current:

Weight: 85kg

2.4km - ???

Push up - 7

Sit up - 40

When are you considering applying? The whole process can take a few months which gives you time to keep training and improve.
Not too sure, i've got the pack they've sent me but i'm tossing between actualy going though with a overseas application which you have to get a sponser ect or just taking the risk and flying over there.

I lived in the UK for a couple of years as a kid so i might be able to use the visa that got approved then, from my understanding being the child of a British citizen i got the visa automaticly this right got removed years later but as i was approved before that i think the visa might be permanate, but i still dont have the $$$ so in the time it will take me to save i should be fit by then... 3 - 6 months..

About the weight issue...
Just how strict are the AFCO and the docs at selection???
I'm 1,78 and weigh about 90kg's!!
There are a lot of different oppinions on this forum...
I'm physically fit,but according to some people i'm too heavy...I've been like this for years, had a medical check with my GP before i applied to join,he said i'm fine...
So do they look at your BMI,then your results in the run etc.???
Or do they just weigh you and send you home if they think your too heavy??

Someone tell me if I'm wrong but it looks as though you are looking at joining The AGC.
If so then the fitness standards required are at the bottom end of the scale. I think you can run a 1.5 mile in 15 minutes and still get excepted into basic training. Still you will have to improve on your press ups but that will come.

BMI is only used against you if you are obviously too plump or too thin. It's commonly accepted that any successful rugby player/sprinter/oarsman has a disproportionately high BMI.

If you are solid muscle (and I mean Linford Christie solid), the Doc will ignore your BMI. I was at RMAS with a guy who had a BMI 0.1 point within the MINIMUM - he looked like Mr Muscle, and struggled. Conversely there was a chap there who had a stomach like a Space Hopper - he was the fastest and fittest swimmer I have ever seen.

It's used against fatsters and Mr Burns-esque weaklings. Unless you are genetically a cuboid, you should be able to get a BMI of 20-23 by hard graft. Reduce the cake intake if you are too chunky; reduce the weights if you are like Arnie; take up rowing/boxing/weights if you are too thin.

Don't worry about the BMI, any doctor worth his salt that works with people who do sports knows how BMI is not the ideal measure of someones weight. BMI is only accurate with people who have done hardly ANY sports, doesnt take into account muscle. Focus on improving all yer scores, your weight will probably drop doing so anyway.

well having had countless discussions with various people about the BMI scale used it depends on who you talk to, some people are adamant you cant even apply till you are the required wait and get this when i asked the careers officer who told me this how someone say like Mike Tyson would get in (tyson was 15 stone 3lbs at his peak fighting weight and he had no body fat!) according to the officer Tyson at his height would have to weigh 13 stone 5 just to get selected!!!!!

I think that theres a new ruling where if you can get your Doctor to certify on medical grounds that your weight is because of muscle and not fat then theres no problem!

This is my diary for the last 5 days, i'm happy that i've decresed my time for the run by 4 mins but still got some way till i reach the 9 - 12 min mark although i'm not sure you could call it a full run as it's more like run then walk and more run, sit ups are ok but i would like to increase it to 50, didnt increase the push ups by much so i've still got a long way to go there.

Push up and sit ups are the max i can do in one set.

Friday 23/4/04

1.5mile/2.4km run - 22 Mins 10 seconds

Push ups - 10

Sit ups - 40

Saturday 24/4/04

1.5mile/2.4km run - 20 Mins 30 Seconds

Push ups - 10

Sit ups - 40

Sunday 25/4/04

Rest

Monday 26/4/04

1.5mile/2.4km run - 17 Mins 55 Seconds

Push ups - 12

Sit ups - 40

Tuesday 27/4/04

1.5mile/2.4km run - 18 Mins 10 Seconds

Push ups - 12

Sit ups - 42

Weight 84kg

Tempted to choose more of a combat postion but i'd rather choose somthing i can do as a career when i leave the army, Plus i heard a few stories were people went into the infantry came out with no real skills for a civillian job and ended up doing some dead end job which i certainly dont want, plus IT/Comms is one of my interests.
