Bed Blocks

Post by macster »

Just wondering which Arm the Bed Block originated in?
And apart from the obvious character building properties of said blanket arrangement and also giving JNCO's something to throw out of windows, is there an official reasoning behind the format i.e. for stowing at sea.

Considering the conservative nature of everything military, I could never understand the colour schemes of the counter pane (I don’t know how to spell it). Certainly some of the jazziest material in the mob!

Do they still have them today?

Any good yarns about the humble bed pack appreciated.

I think the real forces have grown out of them. Still see space cadets struggling to put one together at o stupid hundred though. (The smart ones have it stashed under the bed ready to go).

I remember using one of more lurid orange bed covers as a rather fetching Hari Krishna costume for a run ashore, together with a tom-tom drum made out of the pussers issue bin.

It's scary to think that somewhere there was a factory full of people making these bed covers.

Those where the days when the sides of the mattress where squared of with cardboard to give it a sharp edge, also the top and the sides of the bed block where treated the same to give it that extra sharp edge. From what I could make out about the orgins of the Bed block was to air the bed
and the bed clothes and try and stop any little visitors getting to comfortable.

Not forgetting clipping your braces from your No1 trousers on the corners to give them that 'just so' look :)

When I was in military nick I never slept on my bed.

My entire uniform was laid out on it.
My bed block and bed were perfect.

There was NO way I was going to give myself an hours work and possibly get loads of hassle when I could just sleep on the floor.

For me bed blocks were a pain in the backside, especially when the blankets were not square at the ends , I think one of the ideas behind them was to make them easier to carry if you had to change quarters but I could be wrong
