Could anyone tell me how long selection is and what commitment is needed .I read somwhere that you need to attend every drill night and everyother weekend for 2 years without missing a day.
Also do they have a particular date for intakes or is it worth applying now even though I belive my fitness wont be up to the mininum requirement for a few months yet
thanks in advance

It has two assesment dates per year. One in Dec (Sat) and one in June - ish.
They then give you a fitness test and interviews.
You go away and train like a looney, and they are specific on what NOT to do.
Pre-selection starts and is about 2-3 months long. Then hills, 9 months, with test week with the regs (ta have a different speed)
Then continuation.
All in all 18 months to 2 years.
All through this you cannot miss a weekend.
Either have an understanding girlfriend or you wont have one! As on your weekend 'off' you will be training for your weekend 'on'!
The entry level for fitness is level 11 on the bleep test. That is ENTRY level! You are expected to get better, and over time concentrate on differing body parts, running, (legs) weights(back and legs for the hills) all over(for continuation)

I also recommend 'The Quiet Soldier' by Adam Ballinger as a must read for those going for TA selection, although every chapter swings from useful information during selection too his totally irrelevant experiences while living in another country before he went for selection.
Bin Man can you be more specific on what they tell NOT TO DO, training wise before selection?

Don't hurt yourself attempting over zelous training,do loads of cardio vascular stuff to beef up oxygination of blood, swimming is good, ride a bike uphill a lot, don't over do the running aviod impact injuries, there will be plenty running on selection. To start you need to be reasonably fit your fitness will progress as the course goes on if not you fail.
