I quite like the knive I proffed off a Helo Pilot. Simple but robust and always sharp.

Forget messtins get a good old metal mug and water bottle. you can cook scran in it, eat from it, after a quick rinse you can then drink your wet from it.

especially the US ones

A strip of HBM on the rim saves you burning your lips when tea is hot.

So are you saying that when you go out on operations as a RM, you can take your own custom knife if you desire??

Im asking because i have a FS Commando one with the RM badge/crest on the handle. I just wondered what the actual rules were?

I already have a nicely made Andujar folding knife which is handy to have around for day to day use, but I need to get a good knife for use in the field. I don't want one of the hollow handled knives that shatter the first time you use them. Any suggestions?

that`ll be more for your desk or wall............don`t forget, all the extra kit you want, YOU have to carry. a knife doesn`t weigh that much on its own, but all bits of kit add up. the question is, do you really want to carry a big time "Rambo" Knife? will what your going to be doing require such a tool?

5 gallons of water in a Jerry can weighs 56Lbs, you will more than likely have to carry two rounds of Mortar Ammunition,(I forget the exact weight, about 22lbs i think....Andy will be more precise) they come in a nice plastic case (or used to) and the rubber rings around the top make ideal elastics for the bottoms of your dpm`s.

so, all you have to do is make a list, then sit back and say to yourself, do i really need that?

on the other hand, you could become a Driver/Fitter, and carry as much kit as you want to.

Ok lovely ta! Just wondered what the rules and ethics were. In preparation for joing the Met Police-i went and financed my own personal 'haul' of equipment. Custom made utility belts and wotnot. Well now i aint goin into the old bill-i just wondered about the rules for the Marines. Ok ta-ill sit down and see what i actually will need. Oh -1 more thing. Are marines issued with a sidearm-as well as the SA80?

I was issued with two, a left and a right. but on a serious note, occifers get side arms, and usually the SC guys. unless its changed of course

Lol-i had to read it twice before i realised it was a joke. My ex boss (female) her partner was in the marines- and he's got a shotgun in his house. Its all legal and that, so i was wondering whether ex/military people are allowed special firearms licences, in order to keep them on their premises?

If you turned up for RM training (or in a Commando Unit for that matter.) with a FS knife, especially with the Corps crest on it, I think you might have the P*** taken out of you a bit.
Settle for a Swiss Army knife with all its useful gadgets. Or if you want a really multi purpose knife, even in the unlikely situation of having to use it on the "enemy" - try and get hold of the US K Bar. You can even open a can of beans with it!! (That's if the RM's have beans these days!
Ex. forces personnel (even if they might have been SF), do not have any dispensation when it comes to firearm certificates. Perhaps that is just as well, considering some of the loony b******* I served with. Tony B'liar would definitely need his bullet proof shield in the House of Commons!!

Without a doubt the best bladed weapon you can have to hand is the 'pussers' gollock. I still have mine. its still in good nick and used regularly, but I must admit to keeping it inside my rucksack when on projects and only take it out when needed. 'Gollocks' the original bootnecks leathermen.

Admitedly its no good for shaving or eating beans with but it's stil a good bit of kit. You are not likely to prof one until you are in a unit and even then you have to keep it hidden. I saw one that had been cut down to an 8"blade another good tool.

I have always had a K-Bar since the late 60s and they are handy, but I think these are being phased out for the multi-tools that are on offer.

Aye, the good old racing spoon... can't beat it.

I believe that you can now get a knife with a full set of screwdrivers, ratchets (you listening vmremf?), spare CDi for most major manufacturers, condoms - various sizes, crampons, DVD, Video and MP3 player. I think it also has a knife somewhere

Just get a Wilkie Knive!

Chop down trees with it. Use it as a knive to gut animals, Use it to turn your food over in the pan. Dig a hole to dump in, It is a belting bit off kit!

Another good bit off kit is the Yaffelingspanner/can opener. Issued to RAF crewmen as part of their survival kit in the 60's/70's I proffed mine through me Dad (PTI RAF/suvival instructor) It's a bog standard canopener but has an extra half inch spoon at the end.

Your aim in life is to make as little impression in/on the land as possible. I used to have 3 days worth of kit on my belt and my lightweight Norge army issue bergan. (grey in colour and did the job)

Also tried to avoid giving hints to the people who did not like me where I was and what I was doing. Heck it worked for me!
