Search Facility

Post by El T »

Hi Jay,

I apologise in advance if this subject has been broached previously.

Would it be possible to have a search facility that scans the posts and the subject ?

I seem to spend hours (well lots of minutes) hunting through posts for a subject that I saw a few weeks ago, but in the end give up.

For example someone (Owdun ?) wrote a very informative post on Red White and Blue Admirals (one ball, two balls and no balls at all !) and I wanted to ask that person about another Naval matter concerning ship's rates (Not the ratings) but haven't a clue where I saw the post.

If you look up the top there under the Military Forums logo, you'll find what you require. ;)

Well, I knew my eyesight was on its way out, but didn't realise it was that bad !

I was expecting to find a nice little white box to put a search argument into

Am I preconditioned or what ?

El T

Thanks for asking that, you are braver than me, but at least now we both know where it is.

Archie, thank you for your support.

At least only one of us had to make an idiot of themselves.

Come on, own up you lot out there - who else couldn't find the search facility ?

P.S. It is actually very quick - well done Jay.

El T, hi there,
Search facility is an excellent bit of kit. Use it in three ways, by author, by topic or keyword. Another way to search for topics by a particular member is to click on their “profile” button at the bottom of any of their posts. The user’s profile will appear, click on “find all posts by…” The first couple of lines of all of that users posts will be visible. You can customise this in terms of dates, etc.
Another useful item is “memberlist” use this to search for a members details in several ways, joined date, top ten posters ascending or descending. Have fun.

Regarding the rating system for ships, it was based on the number of guns a vessel carried, from 100 down to 20 or 30. First rates were always 100 gunners, second rates 90 ish and third rates 80 ish. These first second and third rates formed the Line of Battle. Fourth fifth and sixth rates acted in supporting roles. That`s putting it very simply, for more detailed explanation, check out,

Helpfull to a fault, that`s me
