My daughter works in an elderly persons complex (Private) part time and they are taking it in turns over the Christmas period to look after the old folks wellbeing, my girl is doing the 1500-1700 hrs stint Christmas and Boxing Days, OK she gets paid SINGLE TIME but these people are dedicated to their cause and often it is a thankless job, not that they look for the pat on the back if you know what I mean. To me these are the people who deserve the MBE's not the tarts that purport to be professional sportsmen on a 100 grand a week.

Christmas? I don't know anymore other than the recognized birthday Christ, which is a big deal. I think you want memories though. When I was a kid my dad on Christmas Eve would read the Christmas story from the bible and if we complained he'd start all over. My mom would be cooking more food than all of us on this forum could eat combined. After the reading we'd open presents from eachother. Then we'd put out cookies and milk for Santa and rush to bed while dad(Santa) went into the garage with a large cup of coffee and asymbled the bikes and what not. The the next morning, well you can guess.
We don't do much now, but this year since I have a boy I'll play the whole bit. Maybe I'll read the bible story like my dad when he can understand, but this year it is all Santa to him.
My best present I can remember was a BB gun though, sure had fun for years with that thing.
Before my son and in the service I didn't go home or do much at Christmas. It just turns into a quiet solemn day after you spend it tolling around a desert in a muslim country, or on a stinking ship where everyone is down and yet pretending to be happy.
Well that is my end of it.

Aldo,

So why don't you make a difference to Christmas then? You can do it you know you can
Don't get me wrong, I do visit relative and I'm not a miserable git like some :COUGH:lew:COUGH: :) But I visit them all year round. I'm not particularly religious though I do keep an open mind so there's no real need for christmas, at least in my house. I do have a 2 year old neice so we give her presents and put up a few decorations for her but other than that it's just another day, but hey my days are great :D

Thanks for the heads up on christmas, better get saving :D

Christmas to me is about cheap beer, lots of food and cheesy tv shows. One thing that gets on my rag is those who feel the need to be happy and cheerfull when its christmas ,even thou there not religious and down right miserable buggers the rest of the year. Id like to be a kid again but i cant, last year i didnt wake up untill 1pm and that was because i was dragged out by my dad. I also fail to see the point behind presents,id rather have a party instead of having to buy every tom dick and harry a present they probably wont even like.

Presents from my understanding were to symbolize the gifts given to the baby Jesus. Why we exchange gifts like we do and in the number we do, you got me. After spending a few holidays in the worlds crap holes, I cease to get excited over them. Pray, eat and open up some stuff you could careless about. In America its for the kids mainly.

I think last year had to be the worst for me i worked from 8 till 6 in a very very very busy restaurant for £8 an hour, it sucked. but on the whole chritmas isnt that bad, maybe a little bit selfish but its all in good fun. Im not religious so for me its a time to relax and think about things, past present future nothing to deep but ponder my life, so i suppose im one of those selfish people.

We.
As a family attend Church on Christmas Eve.
It's one of the few times we can be together.
On Christmas Day morning my Father-in-law,Brother-in-law and myself
get our butt's up and feed breakfast to the less fortunate than ourselves.
Then we get home feed our faces(Ham not Turkey)and get shitfaced.
Normal Crimbo surely?
And don't call me Shirley!

Christmas I don't like.
When I was 11yrs old I asked for an airgun, what did I get a bloody table tennis set. For the next 50yrs every time I see one I give it a kick.
They used to in my day get the jocks in the reg to do xmas rear party,in return we would get off for new year so never did have many xmases at home.
It.ry and give the greatgrand kids what they need now

What got my goat this year was seeing Santa in a WalMart in bloody September when I was shopping for hurricane supplies! September!!!
I strongly object to that.

Christmas should be (and for most, usually is) a positive time, regardless of your faith. For me, the faith part- the birth of Christ- is the most important. Then the family part. It's unfortunate that the least important part, the commercial christmas now drowns out the real reasons for the holiday; I hate hearing BUY!BUY!BUY for the HOLIDAYS! in September, and hate even more hearing "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" in stores during October.

It being December 1st today, I finally let down my guard and stopped objecting to seeing decorations and hearing the carols on the radio. Even did a bit of shopping!

Christmas is a time for reflection. My problem with it is I'm not a particularly 'positive' kinda guy.

I saw a program on the telly and they think for the 3 kings to have seen such a star it would have had to have been in April.

A time for reflection?

That doesnt really work in my house mate, I see what you mean with Jesus and all but not here.

My first memory of christmas is the police arresting my dad for stealing a turkey and all the presents out of some rich blokes car.

We were dirt poor in a terrible place in London, he and some mates were walking along and saw this auto, he got everything in the car and his mate got the car. (he was also arrested just prior.)

Not something I wish to reflect on.

Just be happy you have the time off work, you aren't stuck in the middle of some war, and you aren't stricken with poverty.

God bless our boys in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Amen.
