Artificer! answers needed please

Post by bennett_42 »

I am 20 years old and am seriously thinking of applying to become an artificer in the royal navy. I know a fair amount about the job through booklets sent to me by the royal navy but i really really need to know more about the selection process. Particulary the tests that you have to sit? I have 9 GCSEs, seven of those A-C and 3 AS levels. I know that i have above the minimum academic requirements but i know this alone will get me nowhere! If anyone can help me with information on the selection process i would be grateful! The tests and interviews in particular. Thanks in advance.

I am 16, and i did go the artificer route to join the RN 1st, but then was let down when my GCSE results came in.
To be an artificer you have have C in maths, english and science to apply, then u take your reruit test and need to do well in that, then a further technical and arithmitic test to see what technical trade u can be allowed to join, either a Weapons technicain, marine technicain or a air technicain are the 3. But with your qualifications your should breaze through mate, go for it!!
after your test the presidures are standerd i think, interview, medical, fitness.

If all goes well and get in the RN, u do you 8 week in ralleigh, then a 4 year course (this part may not be accurate) Depending what trade you pick you will go to a base for 1 1/2 year i think, then get drafted for 1 1/2 yr, then go back to what ever base u started your 4 yr apprentaship at for the rest of your time.... then you get drafted to your 1st base!!!

And thats all i can tell ya. Please correct me if i am wrong anybody!!

hope i helped

Currently serving as a Tiff in Collingwood. Regarding tests to join they are pretty noddy and for someone with your quals. you should have no real difficulty passing them so long a syou keep your head together. They can be quite unnerving as you are under quite a tight time frame. The docs the AFCO will have sent you will have a couple of sample questions in them. These are more than close to what you will be asked they are (if you are lucky) identical to some I was asked. As for the interviews it is always good to get a base knowledge of the navy before you go in. You can get this without any great turmoil through the navy website.
What the literature might not tell you is that you are now getting a degree from Portsmouth uni to complete your Artificer career course. This is apparently going to be linked with your future promotional courses and can be upgraded with relatively little extra work from yourself so Tiff is definetly worth considering.
HOWEVER, this course is highly academic. There is very little practical and, certainly for the first 12 months, there is little to no reference to any navl equipment. If you are joining up to play with Guns, Missiles, Sensors, and, Comms. then be prepared for the best part of three years academics.
This is not so bad for the ME and AE branches but I cannot elaborate on their course too much as I am a WE. I do know that the first few months of their course follows along the same lines as ours and also that their shore time is much longer while under training (so is their sea time though).

Anything else I can help with then drop me a line.
