Royal Navy Traditions

Post by PHIL »

I was just wondering about Royal Navy Traditions. 8)

As most of us know that the RN is the 'Senior Sevice', surely the RN must have its own traditions gathered from History and Folly alike.

So my question(s) is this 'What names and dates are given to the RN traditions throughout the year?'

Please help because I hear that the RN has lots of tradition but I'am a bit of a newbie to the forces. :o

There are two ghostly figures who post on the Royal Marines forum called JR and Owdun. Now it's rumoured that JR prevented Owdun from administering the first ever kiss of life to Nelson, approximately three weeks before he was shot!

13th January, my mum's birthday. :P
Sorry, being daft, very unusual. Anyway, try this link http://www.bluejacket.com/tradition.htm or go to Google and type in Royal Navy Traditions. there's loads of info. You may have read about 'Jackspeak', a book of RN slang and friendly Naval expressions of endearment, like "Piss off Jack." Trans. 'Please go away you friendly Naval chucklebosun.'

F off Jack is perfectly correct, it's just that I'd mixed Phil with Rock On, another new comer who is female and was trying to be delicate. Always a first time! Anno Domini

 Aye Frank,It was that 'Bloody'Sgt Secker that got all the glory, and as the story go's refused to clean the Blood off his uniform buttons hence the reason why the upper echelon (stripeys) have what seems to us poor Mortals Dirty Buttons Ahem sorry Gilt, and us poor 'Bootnecks' spent most of our time in the Fighting Tops? did'nt have time to dilly dally with the Passengers.Okay set ya T'gallants and Tops'ls stand by all gun crews. And for those that are not aware the terminolgy 'Show a Leg' came from the days when wimmin where allowed on board and in the Mornings the Bosun's Mate would go through the messdecks shouting 'Show a Leg' if you had a hairy legs you were turfed out of the 'Mick' and if the Mrs had Hairy legs To Bad.Stand by to repel boarderers.Aye JR

Now I know jacks got some funny habits, but I am sure I heard one of them say he had a "lick of the cat" No wonder pusser got rid of the ships cat.
