The kit ain't cheap but it'll last.
If you serve 10 years then a berghaus vulcan will cost you about £14 a year! Small price for increase in quality.
the boots will last two years then you can re-sole them and get another year or two from them.
All up to the individual.

They say that the Berghaus stff should last a lifetim and if not they will replace the knackered parts for free or re-sew it for you. Now that is value. Would Nike do that for you?

Hi guys, I'm not really worried about my own personal boots that I'm using now. It doesn't matter if the eyelets wrip them to pieces. I just wondered what you'd do in basic with the boots that they issue you. I am presuming that CTCRM have a pretty similar cleanliness of boots policy, as the rest of our armed forces. I can get my own boots shining really nicely (probably not nicely enough), but I wondered what the instructors at lympstone would say if the tongue became all mankey.
Oh yes, someone asked, yes the eyelets are actually ripping the leather, or at least its surface, and not merely denting it.
Cheers guys. I'm probably going to concentrate on getting my running fitness up to scratch before I add a bergan to my back. Any suggestions as to how heavy to start off? 10-20-30-40lbs? Or heavier?

Dont worry about what to do with your boots. You will be shown how to take care of them, and they will even let you breack them in.

I know people in the 'stores' in the army,needless to say ive got odd bits of kit here and there 
I wouldnt worry about bergan training. Your not going to show up at CTC and be expected to go yomping with 150plb in the first week. You will gradually be introduced to it. Thou i would advice against light work.30-50 plb and keeping a jog pace going. Remember start slowly and build up. Ideally you will use 15plb/7kg and slowly add to it each week and not exceed 40plb simply because there is no need.

Ok, cheers for the advice on bergen training. I'll bear it in mind. I don't have anything wrong with my feet medically, so no worrys there. All I was asking was would the instructors bollock you if your boots got all mankey, and you couldn't polish them up nicely because of the damage. Still not to worry, I'm sure I'll have all kinds of "fun" finding out first hand, if I'm lucky enough to get past the initail stages. Cheers.

Ive always used South African webbingupto this point, as my issued '58 stuff was propper w@#k. SA is v good, i love it, will post a pic sometime, only slight problem is that the ammo pouches are tight, and its a bit of a fiddle getting 2 mags in.
Jus been issued some 95 though, and im off to SENTA next week for some fun & games, so i'll see what thats like, though im not sure itll be as good as the SA. (For the fact it has 2 "smallish" utility pouches, and 1 water bottle pouch), where as the South African has 1 large utility pouch and 2 water bottle ones. Though I did modify mine slightly to sew some clips on, so I could have a PLCE sidepouch from the back
Also, as for a bergan, whats wrong with a PLCE one? its ace
.Doubt it'll be possible, but when/if i get to CTC, I'd LOVE to take my pro-boots, they are the best thing god ever created....ever

It does in fact have 1 utility pouch, 1 water carrier and 1 spade bit (call a spade a spade). 1 bottle of water instead of spade + 1 in carrier = 2bottles of water, add a mug, mess tins, 1 days scran, a hexi cooker, cleaning kit, bfa when not in use, and a few mags and there's loads of room
PLCE Side-pouches make a rocket pack mate, easier than adding it to your webbing.
PLCE Bergen is reasonable but technology is leaving it behind, look at civi stuff and its all designed for max comfort and to allow air to circulate into your back. I'd probably stick with mine but some people don't.
Pro-boots are sometimes issued to lads with ankle or tendon injuries at CTCRM. Made by same company that makes the standard issue boot that people want to replace. And the company know Pro-boots are good as they don't exactly sell them cheaply. Even trade prices are dear.

They have issued 58 pattern to TA nods on there basic, its hillarious watching them trying to pack all their current issue kit into the old style 'large pack'
Its even funnier watching them trying to repack it in the field when they have had a kit explosion pre morning inspection
