Jungle, arctic training etc is carried out by units, so it's all down to whether your unit gets put on a course or exercise. However, this is only training and unless an operation comes up where units with this training are preferred, it isn't a role as such, there just Royal Marines and that's it. The only exceptions are the Mountain Leaders who specialise in mountain and arctic warfare (but do train elsewhere as well), but as this is a specialiation you do have to volunteer for it.

on blue peter a few years ago there were men going into a square hole in the arctic, with sking equipment on.
They are called ice breaking drills.
does every marine have to do this, do you get selected, and can you say no, i dont want to do it.
thanks

Sorry Matt,

All serving marine on winter deployment have to under go Ice Breaking Drills. The drill is their so you can get yourself out of a fix if you break through the ice. If ypour oppo's try to help you out they risk getting them selves in the same situation, which with arctic tempretures is a dangerous thing.

You only have to do this once per winter deployment and it is good fun (especialy the tot of rum after you have been through)

The whole brigade can be anywhere in the world fully supported in 72 hours . With this in mind they cant prepare for an operation like normal army units. Constant training for every occasion is needed. You will be sent to the hottest of places, the coldest and many weekends freezing your ass off in the countryside pouring with rain  . As a marine you are expected to undergo all training require of you. I understand what you mean by specialising in artic warfare but that means if you need to be sent to the jungle your stuffed. I do however think you can apply for a training position where you will spend more time in norway but again you will still do jungle training.
