Not sure about other countries but I worked in the embassy in Saudi Arabia for a few years and the security officer was supplied by the Foreign Office. Other security staff i.e gatemen etc were locally employed, addittional security outside the gates was supplied by the Saudi police - two officers, one with a gun and one with ammunition!!

There are security officers within Foreign and Diplomatic service, I should know as I have application forms here!

A fair few are ex-service personnel. In difficult areas units will be brought from home. These may include Close protection services from RM Police troop.

However, to answer the exact question, no. We do not do the same duties as USMC at embassy.

During Christmas I met a former diplomat who used to be quite senior in the Foreign Office. At one point in time he had Royal Marine guards while living and working in a very unstable African country, I can't remember which one.

On more than a few occasions his residence was attacked and the Royals Marines had to intervene, i.e kill the transgressors.

He owed his life and the lives of his family to the RM.
