I do it GCSE geography style. Get a piece of fine string, and carefully lay it down over the route you take on a decent map, the length of the string you end up with is the straight line distance travelled (not taking into account vertical distance). Measure the length and convert it to real scale and there you go
.

Chris, Royal used to tbe taught to place the corner of a piece of paper at the start point, then at every bend in the road make a slight pencil mark on the edge and on the road/route, and then move on etc. The cumulative total is your distance when placed against the scale. it works very well with a 50,000.
Grammar and spelling is a matter of personal interest; don't worry about it. It's Christmas.
However I'm itching to see Ross' first report from Lympstone!

I worked out my distances by using Streetmap.co.uk then applying the old string method to the screen. Get a ruler handy and check the distance ratio.

I am with Mike here, but instead of using the string on the screen method I used Yahoo maps. You can enter your start and end location and it will spit out the milies.
Yeah yeah I know it's the lazy method, but I think it's great when you want to play with different routes ofton.
The disadvantage is however this is only good for the roads, and you miss out on the great off road adventures.
Good Luck,
Justin.
