question about RM
I'm new here and American so I'm trying to understand this.Is the Royal Marine Corps a branch of the Navy as in the US?If so how far do things overlap and in how much control do Navy brass have over the RM-i.e. budget, support roles etc?I know this is a bit vague but I am sincerely interested.

As we tried to explain to some of our cousins on a night ashore after the
New York Tattoo on being asked what the RM on our shoulders meant ..... the reply ' Real Marines ' was delivered ....
Second floor bars are not the choicest of places to deliver such news ...
We had a great Honour Guard from our cousins by the way - great bunch.

Or to quote from Rudyard Kipling:
As I was spittin' into the Ditch aboard o' the Crododile
I seed a man on a man-o-war got up in the Reg'lars' style.
'E was scrapin the paint from off of 'er plates, and I sez to 'im, "'Oo are you?"
Sez 'e "I'm a jolly--'Er Majesty's Jolly-- soldier an' sailor too!"
Now 'is work begings by Gawd knows when, and 'is work is never through:
'E isn't one o' the reg'lar Line, nor 'e isn't one of the crew.
'E's a kind of giddy harumfrodite --soldier an' sailor too!
And if from the USA and understand that
Well Done

I could hardly understand my old lady first time we spoke and she claims not to have an accent-her best friend is from up north-somewhere near Scotland-and I still cannot understand her at all.The only Scot I understand is groundskeeper Willie on the Simpsons and only just!

‘Oy …
If “up North somewhere near Scotland “ would happen to by Tyneside
on the Durham side of the river – This used to be the Kingdom of Deira
and the capital was in Chester le Street …..This was before the
establishment of Durham by some monks carting Cuthbert around with
Oswald’s heed.
The Kingdom lasted until the battle of Dalriada – and some people are of
the opinion that it would have been better if the old kingdom had carried
on up to the present day …
Chester le Street instead of Smoke …what a thought…
( Deira stretched from half way up Scotland to down as far as York )
The language of the Tynesider is still the original O.E. and should
therefore have been adopted by the rest of you – should be obligatory in
all regional schools etc… and spoken by at least Blurr – ( can’t understand
him anyway )
I mean – Brum and Scouse and all of the other dialects south of York can
only be derivatives of the melodic Geordie palaver…
Strike a blow for England - larn Geordie Palaver the day man ...
and only drink Broon.
Howay the lads ....

Didn,t there used to be a special brew for the ship builders?
I used to deliver goods all around the N/E and I.m almost sure that you could get it BUT only in certain Pubs and clubs,I remember it being very strong.

Very happy that so many remember the Blue Star Line….
(Mind ye – it’s only 4.5 nowadays – I can buy the cans here ).
( Or I could buy the cans here – if it was worth it ).
Mayhap we should start a movement to shift the seat of power –
That is Blurr’s seat – up to Chester le Street …..
Canny for the airport
Allright for the Metro Centre
Close to Beamish
And – military camps at Ponteland – like the old days…
Imagine the runs ashore – Gateshead, Morpeth, Tynemouth
Whitley Bay – exotic and wild Hexham…….
( If you thought that Bickleigh was remote try Borcavicium,
Housesteads to yeez scholars…
With mile forts all the way over Hadrians Wall from Wallsend
to Carlisle there should be just about enough room for the Corps of today.
The mind boggles man ..
Handy for all of you lost souls coming ‘over here’ from the nether regions
‘doon sooth’ - Just torn right at Newcastle – mind the step…
‘Course the beor is 6.50 in your money… by the pint that is.
Geordie Palaver would be grand for the European Union negotiations.
We used to be able to beat them by ‘normal’ means –
but since we’ve joined ‘em we can always bend their minds with a bit
of Tyneside common dog….
If all a yeez can’t understand us – think what we could do in Brussels…
We’d have them gibbering like they did when they were lead
by that fellow with the itch who was only one and a half metres tall –
Now there was a Bantam.
What ? We’re not taking any ‘Euro money’ here hinny – no bloody whey.
Come to think of it – Blurr smiles like a Geordie – but he dosn’t sound
like one – does he ? And him from a good Conservative family too !
How did this thread start by the way … ?
Ah – yes … Raised and (under)paid by the Admiralty…..
Perhaps the relocation of the seat of power deserves it's own 'Subject' ?
'Aye man

new question
OK,I appreciate the info and responses, and have a new question on the same subject.I have met quite a few US Marines who are sick of being treated like ugly stepchildren by the Navy brass-they get out of date used army gear all the time, and are always being put on the back burner when it comes to funds so that the Navy can have a new submarine or the latest planes to fly from their carriers-yet they look down on the Marines at the same time.Even though they are not as well funded as they should be these are dedicated troopers who do a hell of a job when called upon, and I have a great deal of respect for them, the USMC force recon is a hard bunch who train the Navy SEAL teams-and then the SEAL's get all the glory and have movies made about them. Also every other branch of the US military send their people to the Marine Corps sniper school to learn from the best. Many of these guys think that the Marine Corps should be a seperate branch since the Navy doesn't take care of them-any of you guys have the same feelings?Does the Royal Navy treat their Marines well in your opinion?

Well Gearjammer…
Here I am advocating Home Rule for Deira and you have
a problem of whether the Navy treats the Marines fairly…
Ah well – here goes …. ( by all means join in lads ).
In the US I suppose that the Navy have more Eagle Scout recruits
than The Marines due to sheer size in numbers….
(The team with the most Eagle Scouts wins the Brownies)…
(Funds, that is).
In the United Kingdom funding and support can be miles apart….
And miles away …..
It is common knowledge that the Admiralty treats the Royal Navy
every bit as badly as they treat the Royal Marines !
In my time we had such low funding that we had to use flags to
communicate – and lamps – and the Royal Navy only had party
flags called ‘Bunting’ can you believe….
And the Royal Navy had to economise on messaging …
Hence when a submarine popped up in the middle of Grand Harbour,
Malta – they hoisted the Church pennant, Position pennant and the
Interrogative pennant – only three bits of bunting…..very effective..
‘God, Where am I’
Funding – and the winning of same in competition with other Arms
of the Services has always been a problem…..and always will be…
Anyway - What is 'Fair' - The distribution of Brownies is not always fair...
But – let’s face it – could the Royal Marines carry any more gear ?
Who needs it – Support is nice - when someone else is providing it,
And carrying it….
Anyway the clue was to ‘get through’ on a wet bootlace and little else…
Money in the pocket would be ‘nice to have’ though…
‘Aye
