Weapon system operator (crewman)
Hi
Is there any WSO on here who could let me know what their job is like. I am asking this because it is one of the trades I am looking at applying for.
Thanks

Trouble is, I'm a linguist, so I could only tell you about the training up to streaming, and then what some of my mates' lives are like...
For instance, the other 2 girls from my course who are now Chinook loadies seem to be always in the desert...

I would love to be a WSOp crewman on the Merlin or Puma but as I can speak French I might get streamed to linguist.
How is it decided which WSOp roll is best for each person.
What does your day consist of as a WSOp linguist?

You would have to be pre-streamed linguist as there's obviously an extra aptitude test. I have a feeling they shouldn't be recruiting at the moment as we've a lot of newbies coming through the training system and noone to look after them when they get here. It's all a bit complicated, and I can't really go into it because of security clearances.
The streaming for the generic guys is usually done based on what the requirement is for each trade, but they do take your academic results and character into account if they can. If there are 14 people on the board, and 22Grp decide they need 14 radar operators, then that's what they'll get! Theoretically, you are supposed to be able to change trade within the NCA branch after 2 tours...

Oh right ok.
So you are streamed to which ever WSOp trade is most needed at the time, after you have served a certain amount of time you can put in to be transferred to another WSOp trade, were ever possible.

That's the general idea!
You do get to say what your preference is throughout the course, but you need to remember that you may not get it at the end. Even if most people do, there's usually someone who's disappointed, unfortunately.

So its pretty much the same streaming process as pilots, they say the two favorite aircraft they would like to fly and the one they would least like to fly in, and the best is done to get them were they want. With in reason.

Hi i'm new to this forum but i am i hopeful WSO/WSOp.
I've been doing research into WSOp training and the progression of their training through to specialising in EW,Acoustic,Linguist or RW/ME Crewman. However i am finding it difficult to find details on their training at these points.
I seem to have have found very detailed information on WSO training all the way through to the OCU stage but when it comes to WSOp i'm struggling. I understand some information is classified, especially with Linguist, but more detail than, "72weeks DLS @ RAF Chicksands then 2 weeks @ Cranwell then Brevet" would be very helpful.
Cheers
