Army - Diver Specialist... Questions...

Post by Arran »

Hi I had a question about the army diver specialisation. I been interested about getting into the diving aspect but had a few questions.

It says you can specialise in this from the Royal Engineers, Could you get to do this if you was say, in the Parachute Regiment? It says on the website that when you pass you join your unit diving team, so if the para's had a diving unit i suppose you could go there etc.

Does anyone know what the selection process is like, how many people are excepted and the pass rates etc and what the training is like?

Thanks for the help in advance!

Thanks for the link, the fitness side doesnt look to bad. Its a shame you cant transfer across to do the diver course as I really wanna do both, spose i could go into the Parachute Regiment for a number of years then come out and join the Engineers, then i get the dream of serving with the paras and acheive another goal of becoming a diver, that is assuming eveything would work out to plan :D. The problem with me is I want to do a lot of things and have a very active mind always thinking whats best a new ideas and ways round things etc, be nice if it had an off button...

Could always do the diver course outside of the forces, Ive found a few places that do traininng courses into becoming a diving instructor, rec diver and rescure diver, would be a good course to do after forces i guess...

Arran,

I think you are getting so far ahead and speaking so far out of your arse right now its scaring even me.

Paras then Engineers and diving and parachuting even before you have applied??

Why dont you go engineers from the start, you can then go 9 sqn for your wings, 59 for your dagger and they also have a diving section!

Then you can go either air or boat troop up at Hereford?

Sorry to seem harsh but I dont feel anyone can go into the Paras and pass it when hes thinking on later transferring.

I dont think you are a w4nker by the way for asking, just slightly off the ball for considering doing everything.

Join up because I will say this, if you pass basic training, your outlook will be totally different. So Im having a dig as way of advising you that your thoughts will alter so put your effort into getting in and passing out.

Good luck

Mate, i had a similar problem when i first thought of the Forces, first i wanted to be a margerine, then i joined 4para because St Helens detachment was Sniper division and it sounded 'fun' and now im going full time into the intelligence corps.
You can still do the P Coy and Commando Course and all that with the engineers, and more likely than not get to fire your rifle off when you get out there with the engineers too.
Choose the part of the army that you will a) enjoy the work, not just the colour of the beret, and b) that you'll be best at.

If your set on diver tho go into the Navy. and go do a RAPS course to learn how to skydive in your spare time.

That's true, i do half regret not joining Para Reg full time, especially after jacking in the 4 para route. However i listened to my head instead of my cock and for myself i think the intelligence corps is the right career move, as i think would be good at the job and i would enjoy it.
The one thought that keeps me satisfied is "You can't be a civilian sniper" when you come out...

I guess it depends how blood thirsty you are really mate.
I've had a fair few bootnecks and squaddies alike tell me im doing the right thing for me...

It just depends if you can keep the ego in check and resort to the fact that you will be a 'hat'.

Yeh thats one of the big factors in my mind, I dont personally want to be having that regret of not going at it full steam as i wanted and sort of having to sit on the sidelines saying, damn there they go again and im back here. I suppsoe with being in the infantyr regiments likes Para's/Marines etc a career in the armed police is a pocibility for after etc, One of the things that is concernning me is what I can do after, I know once you are in a regiment you will almost fall into a path that will take you somewhere, I guess theres always that wonder and concern about it all.

On the diving side of things I get hwat you mean about going in the navy etc, I just dont feel that im the sort of guy that wants to sit on a boat for most of my days :-? , I know its for some but perhaps not for me, I was reading the marines/sbs websites and if you go into the SBS you get to do diving, also there is diving in the army as a RE. So theres a few ways to do it so I may just have to see what happens and have a longer think making sure that that path is a suitable decision as I may regret not do the soldier path but at the same time not getting a trade/other skill out of it. Lol soo complicated haha.

Mate, as the propaganda tells you, "You are a soldier first and foremost"
I very much doubt the Taliban won't shoot at you because you're in the RE. I don't think they care for capbadges as much as we do.
You'll get into it if you want to, im sure.

Do your BARB, have a look at what jobs are on offer to you, and see which you think will be the best job. think about the day to day routine of the work, there's only so much cleaning a rifle can take...

As i said, it just depends if making war is your game.
Choose with your head tho mate, not your balls.
