Post by Zheka »

Hello everybody.

My name is Yevgeny, I’m 30 years old Russian (proud to be British from November 2005) living in Worthing, West Sussex.

I’m looking into the possibility of joining the Army and probably will come up with some silly questions about it later. This forum looks like a good place to start :)

And please excuse my English. Its much easier to speak :)

Far kinnel, Tovarich. Don`t ever say sorry for your English! It`s better than many on here :P
What military unit did you serve in when you were back home? This will have a bearing on your choices in England.

Thank you guys :)

At the moment I'm just looking into it. Last weekend I talked to my wife about joining the army and to my surprise she was ok about it. Its not something she wants me to do but she said she will support me in everything. Wish I had this conversation few years ago. Army was on my mind for ages and now I just hope I can pass.

I'm not very fit guy and my plan is to train hard for few month before applying. All I do at the moment is run occasionally.

harry hackedoff I never served in russian army. Many young people in Russia avoiding Army at any cost and so did I when I was living there. Quite ironic, considering the fact that I was thinking of making my way to the France and joining the Legion.
Btw what is "Far kinnel"? I don't get it. :-?

Well I didn't come to England to join the forces. Its just my wife happened to be English and we decided to settle in England. I have been here for almost 6 years now. I lived in small town called Kingisepp, close to St Petersburg (lived and studied in SP as well).
We're you not interested in joining one of your professional units?
No SO19. I wanted to go to the army, but not the one I knew in Russia...
The thing with Russian Army is that in most cases guys go to the Army when 18, If you healthy male you have no choice most of the times. Many still will be studying at this age.
Second is that russian army is notorious for its bullying and bad conditions. Bullying can be very bad. People have been severely beaten (usually by older soldiers who were bullied before), tortured. Soldiers are deserting on regular basics, some shoot back (literally). Lots of very bad and sad stories. I think in Russia there is even a party organized by soldiers mothers who trying to protect them. As for conditions, examples can be bad equipment, accommodation, food (or even lack of it) and so on.
Its not everywhere this bad, you can get in good place and serve well, but its a lottery. Here you get paid, its a job, you looked after. Russian army don't give, only takes (imo). Don't get me wrong, Russia have some excellent forces, soldiers, but in general its very unpopular with young people...
Hope it makes sence :)

I was aware of the conditions mate, same in the navy. Bullying was endemic after Afghan withdrawal.
Btw what is "Far kinnel"? I don't get it.
Say it out loud to your missus, she’ll tell you

We often say this to potential recruits, Zheka and in your case it`s more relevant. Go to the Armed Forces Career Office in your town and have a chat with the Staff there. Good luck with it.

On an other point, the old Mother Russia was a longtime ally of UK and since the break-up of the old Warsaw Pact/ CCCP, the barriers set up in the Cold War are slowly being dismantled. I would eventually expect to see all former members of WP joining NATO on some level, even Russia. There are a few exchange posts at the moment and observers at each other`s military exercises and even limited joint exercises. This will continue and it`s all good as far as I can see. Anything which takes us all further and further away from the all-out strategic nuclear exchange(which at several times was far closer than is generally known) is in all our interests

Yeh it's quite interesting that, my Grandad who was an airtraffic controller through quite a large chunk of the cold war tells me of times when it was going to get abit nasty but no one else new about and they would just being on with their normal lives clueless, even most people 'till this day.
