There has been a slight mention in the RAF forums about just how useful the RAF Regiment are and why they defend an airbase all day with nothing happening- no enemy is attacking them.
So I thought it might be a good time to ask ourselves this:
Will we ever fight an enemy that uses it's planes against our airbases? By this I mean the stuff of World War II- the bombing of airfields. If they do then we can launch planes and if they send infantry then The Regiment will ultimately fulfill it's role and purpose.
But will this ever happen? I hate to jynx history but will we ever be in danger from enemy planes?

If you mean a real fight for an airbase and not one of those bloody insurgents with his US$12.99 RPG launcher (from Toys R Us) attacking a small plane sitting parked then I say-
We may one day run into an enemy with (Police Academy sarcasm included) many, many planes. Remember that the world is constantly having conflicts and one day history may just say enough and start World War III. There we go I just jynxed history, so sue me.
If WWIII did start I predict it involving possibly the following countries:
N.Korea, S.Korea, Japan, China, Russia (?)- They were all pointing guns at each others head when N.Korea tested that "nuke"- with the exception of Russia.
If Bush was still about, I bet £10 he'd withdrew all troops from Iraq, Afghanistan saying they were needed for the greater cause and then slap his dick right into it wanting nothing but "War, War, War!" (he'd say).

I blelieave that when the west has oppressed the east enoguh it will break and band together forming a threat and therefore ww3 then we will need those blokes [edited by Frank S.] that defend the airbases after all.
"You should treat your aircraft like you treat your woman."
"So you should take your plane out to dinner and a movie?"
"No, get in her 5 times a day and take her to heaven and back!"

1. The ground-air defence role, which was previously fulfilled by the RAF Regt. rapier units, is performed by the RA now.C4 wrote:There has been a slight mention in the RAF forums about just how useful the RAF Regiment are and why they defend an airbase all day with nothing happening- no enemy is attacking them.

2. What do you suggest we do about ground troops / guerillas attacking our airbases with mortar, snipers, etc?

I did know the RA took over the job of the Rapier units and as for those insurgents thinking they can take us on? My advice is to give 'em hell.scottishcammy wrote:1. The ground-air defence role, which was previously fulfilled by the RAF Regt. rapier units, is performed by the RA now.
