RM-RAF

Post by Archiemac »

I wonder if anyone can give me a steer....I'm an ex Regular Royal Marine and shortly to be joining the RAFR. It was always my understanding that once you have the commando green beret you wear it with whatever beret badge you go on to wear (this is certainly true of transfereees to the RN and Army). However, I've only ever seen the Brigade Air Liason Officer in 3CDO Bde wearing the Green lid with an RAF beret badge.
Does anyone know of the correct dress, as, although I worked bloody hard for it and would like to continue to wear the 'coveted green' I don't want to do the wrong thing and end up looking like a total stroker.

Cheers.

Welcome aboard Archie
BALO?
RAF blork?
Naw beyond me. In my time BALO was a fat back seater from the Andrew with pretensions of adequacy :P

The Green Lid as worn in the after life hey?
Dunno mate. I thought non Royals wore the lid only when attached to the Bde. At other times they wore the Cdo dagger on the left sleeve to signify that they were Cdo Trained, wtf would I know

Any way, fugg all that :-?
There are other areas on this site where you would feel more at home and I`ll be glad to let you ring the bell in there 8)
Drop me a pm mate with a brief CV, I`ll put in a good word

Your not the first Bootneck to join the RAF Oppo and you won't be the last.

My Pop was a F/Sgt PTI (he was RM but his eyesight was not up to it so he had to transfer) and I can well remember that one of his Cpls was also ex RM. A Driver in fact whilst in the Corp. He didnt wear a Green Lid. Mind you it was about 1970 when I first met the guy. So maybe they let you wear it these days.

PM Rotary Bootneck. He joined the RAF after he left the Corp and may have some more up to date info. Well you never know unless you ask.

I went the other direction and transfered from the Crabfats after 6 months to the Corp.

Best of luck anyway Royal.

I can't see you being able to wear your green lid mate. Ref the comment about Army guys wearing them, that is only in Cdo units or in training establishments.

RM to RAF

Cheers fellas.
To be honest I'm not that bothered I asked as a Warrant Officer in the RAF suggested this might be the case.

I've still got my memories and webbed feet. And as they say- once a marine.....

Top site BTW look forward to using it more in the future.

No you cannot wear your green beret, however you can wear the Cdo Dagger on your uniform. Once RAFR you can only wear the green beret if you work with the RMs

I can confirm what TJD has said as I joined the RAF in 1980 having served my 22 years in the Corps.

I had an ex-Para on the same initial course at RAFC Cranwell, and we wound up the RAF guys by telling them we could wear our Green/Red berets with the RAF badge.

At that time they wouldn't/couldn't agree to my wearing the Commando Dagger as there weren't any dress regulations to cover a Bootneck joining the RAF, so for the 13 years I served in the RAF I didn't wear the dagger. They may well do now.

Hope this helps, but let me know if you have any other queries.
