Asthma & Military

Post by Ratty »

My younger brother has just done his A Levels and has his heart set on joining the military.

Unfortunatley he can't join my mob as he is has Asthma.

:(

It is not severe but does require an inhaler sometimes. I know that he can join the British Army but does anyone know a force he can join as this is something that he really has his heart set on. He doesn't care who they are he just wants to soldier.

Thanks for your help

Try a search, (top left corner of screen) there was some discussion about Asthma in the joining section of the Army forum recently.
You should talk to somebody who gives a f**k.

You need to be 100% fit to be in the forces, now what happens if he losses
his inhaler or it runs out, do they have to bring in another by helicopter for him.

You can join the army if you havent been 4 years treatment free.If you have the evidence from the specialist to state that you dont suffer from asthma you will be accepted into the British Army like i have :) :) :) Anyone has any problems joining because of Asthma i will try my best to help you

Maybe that should read "Have been treatment free for 4 years". Its not just treatment its also symptoms and youneed to see the Mil Doc to get ok'ed.

Plus, Marine62 your replying to a post dated 2 and a half years ago, but good effort in offering your services.

I lied about my asthma when I joined. It was starting to wane anyway. There were a few tough moments in basic, but I think all the PT actually helped. It certainly never surfaced again and I got though my APTI's course no probs.

Asthma covers a multitude of sins. For some it is environmentally induced, for others it's allergies, activity induced, or even emotionally induced. My youngest had it - got rid of the cats and he was right as rain. I was happy - the only endearing quality about cats is that they eat birds!

No thats the point i havent been treatment free for 4 years.I had evidence from Bupa hospital to state my breathing was excellent. Then i went to see my doctor to get a report of him he did a breath check on me and said yeh your fine. With the evidence from the doc and Bupa i had a appeal the ACFO sent it up to RSC Glencorse and there accepted it.I just thought that if anyone does have asthma but isnt major you can join the army if you can show evidence

Depends what your joining and the evidence coupled with your history.

Asthma is usally a no no , and is dependant on your trigger factors if they do let you in.

Theres hope, no hope and false hope, just be cautious of what you advise and to whom.

I do not know how this happended, but my ex-husband joined the Army back in 1979 and he has asthma and he smoke cigarettes almost a pack a day when we were married. He can also run 4 or 5 miles with no problem.
I told him when we were married I did not know how he did this and he told me that it was easy for him. I never saw him use an inhalant or have a prescription for an inhalant. My ex-husband did not tell me that he was c@#t after we got married and he did not tell me until our daughter was diagnosed with asthma at the age of 6 years old and she is 13 years old now. She uses an inhalant off and on but she is not dependent on it and she does not have as many asthma attacks as she used to when she was much younger.

I guess you can join the Army and have asthma too.
