MoD vs mods

Post by Marina »

There was some news recenly reporting that the Ministry of Defence is attempting copyright the RAF rondel a.k.a the modernists symbol. The british mod fashion industry including the 'Lambretta Clothing Company' cannot make any item of clothing without the famous target and are challenging the MoD action by claiming that this logo is a public domain

What do you guys think about it ?
How come the MoD didn't do it before as this symbol has been used by many famous people (the Who) since the 1960s ?
Just of out of historical curiosity, how did this legendary RAF symbol weave its way into music, fashion and youth culture and is still eminent to the present day ? :-?

Thanks :)

What the Who did in the sixties is one thing Marina. What happens now is another.
All Service "logos" are now copyrighted to prevent their use, or misuse, in ways which are either inappropriate, disrespectful, or for profit.

At the time, it wasn`t just the Who using the roundel and other symbols, there was a whole "pop-art" movement based on all things British and the Union flag symbol was used the most. Then those nice chaps in the so-called "British Movement" (forerunner of the National Front) hi-jacked that and it`s use now is looked on as racist. Which is a great pity.

Not as informative as your answer Garth, but hey, I do try me best 8)
