I grew up in the desert and we had critters that were in the same family, called Vinegarones (sp). They only grew to a span of about 3 inches as opposed to the 5 inches of that beast in the picture.
I must admit, though, that it was quite an eye opener to have one run up my pant leg one night while fishing. I think I set a speed record for dropping my drawers to kill a big bug. The bite was uh, rather intense but non poisonous.

I used to keep tarantulas as pets, Mexican Red Knee, Pink Toe were the nice ones but I also had a few that were out and out nasty! Columbian Bird Eater, Red Rump and a few others.

Other nasties I has were Baboon Spiders
One bit through a glove and got me a beauty one day. This family belongs to the suborder Mygalomorpha. This is a primitive spider group that some scientists believe should belong to its own order as, for example, the scorpions. These harmless giants are often negatively portrayed as villainous monsters especially in movie industry. They are not dangerous to man although they can inflict a painful bite. They are all mildly venemous, the venom being neurotoxic. However, the smaller species from the Western Cape, Harpactirella lightfooti is reputed to be dangerous to man although there is no evidence of this.

This website looks like BOLLOX to me. I heard that these spiders will only eat a patch of skin the maximum of about a 5p piece. Also, what's this trollox about it screams as it runs after you?!
At the end of the day, your about 100 the size of it, so just KILL it, don't be afraid
Nothing worth doing is ever easy.
Combat Wombat must be so hard it's untrue, I suppose that's the voice of Islington experience speaking?
Let me tell you a secret. When you live in the bush for weeks at a time, and don't shake out your boots, sleeping bag, mug, washing kit, spare knicks etc etc is the time one of those little fellows will bite your appendage, small as it is! They also get hacked off when you sit down near them, place your hand on a rock which they are kipping under, or generally disregard their presence.
Scorpions, snakes and spiders can all spoil your day, so treat them with a bit of respect.
Just another tad of info. Like any creature, when a scorpion or spider is cornered it rears up, or attacks, after all it has nothing to lose. That's when CW's theory goes out of the window.

All i'm trying to say, and it's something you must admit, is the site is a little OTT isn't it. I mean they talk about waking up to find a little spider has eaten your bloody leg! And i'm sorry, but even if the spider does go for the shade of your shadow i very much doubt it screams at you. In reality i'm absolutely terrified of spiders. but the site makes them out to be cold hearted killers, when in reality they are probably more scared of me than i am of it.

It is also called stribulation and yes it does sound like a scream. I have heard them doing it and it makes the hairs on the back of your neck stand up... Imagine two metal combs being rubbed together at very high speed and you'll be pretty close.COMBAT WOMBAT wrote:what's this trollox about it screams as it runs after you?
