Only 23 left.......
Tomorrow, August 4th is the 90th anniversary of the declaration by Britain of war over Germany thus starting WWI. Of 4 million British and Commonwealth servicemen that fought in that war there are only 23 British war heroes left.
Of these 23 only 4 are fit enough to attend the wreath laying ceremony at The Cenotaph tomorrow.
Lest we forget................

May God continue to bless these men. Trench warefare, charging machine guns and wire. That is guts.
I'll drink some moonshine to them for sure.

Let them call me a rebel and I welcome it, I feel no concern from it; but I should suffer the misery of demons were I to make a whore of my soul. (Thomas Paine)

There is only one left who fought for the Kaiser... Today he is 107 and was quoted as saying "Let there be no more wars or fighting".
For one who has been there, seen it and done it: wise words.
Bless them all and I couldn't agree more with Whitey about the trench warfare.

Drums beating, colours flying and bayonets fixed...

I was touched by the quote of one of the four who said "You had to be there to see what it was like, the imagination doesn't go that far". Still, soldiers still do what soldiers do and politicians do what politicians do. I'd like to think that an audience with these heroes from all sides would make a difference to the decisions politicians make.
