Ammo Tech, Armourer or RE

Post by Khendon »

I have been looking at careers in the army, I want something technical, that changes and that has a wide variety of posting opportunities. I ruled out Avionics/Aircraft Technician because I don’t really have an interest in aircraft or electronics.

The two jobs that sound interesting to me and float my boat as it were are Ammo Tech and Armourer. They sound interesting, you can be posted almost anywhere and I have an interest in weaponry and explosives. The only thing that worries me is what I can get out of it for Civvy life after the army. Royal Engineers also sounds interesting, as you get combat engineering and explosives, and a trade for later in life, but if I can see a good civvy related career with my first two choices I would rather go with those.

If anyone has any advice or if there are any ex-Ammo Techs or Armourers about I’d love to hear what they are up to after the Army.

One idea I did have was, as an Armourer hopefully chosen for Artificer training you can get a BTec HNC in Engineering and several qualifications in Engineering Maintenance. I know that in the trade I'm in now, Litho Printing, the bigger companies take on people with engineering qualifications and give them full product training on their equipment. Do things like this happen in other sectors? And as for Ammo tech, I can't really think of any civvy counterparts for that although I’d love to do that job in service.

Any advice much appreciated

Ammo Techs

Dont be fooled into thinking the AT job is all practical or exciting stuff, we do far too much paperwork and there is a lot of tedium on top of the EOD stuff we do, unit inspections, accident investigations, monitoring missile firings which means you watch someone else fire it and write a book on how it went and so on.
I'll leave you with this thought, this job is not for everyone, if you chose this job and are not suited to it, you'll be miserable as sin, but that goes for most jobs in the Military.
Suit this job and it's one of the best job in the Army.

A lot of people say AT is the best job in the army. Don't know that much but it can lead to a career in bomb disposal. I think.
