Infantry regiments

There are a lot of different infantry regiments in the army.
I'm aware that there are certain roles like footguards, paras etc.
But how do people choose from the long list of them, if they do not want to be a para or a guardsman?

It depends just what you want, many people chose the the Regiment close to home or one that many of the forebears have served with
