I'm really thinking of joining as an officer.

Post by Airashii »

Hey,

I am a 16 year old student living in Worcestershire. I began reading a watching books and films about 20/21st century when I was around 12. I have an extreme interest and my main goal in life is to join the Royal Marines as an officer. However, I am also quite smart, I'm hoping for mainly A's in my GCSE's which I only have a few left to take. I'm also going to go to sixth-form, taking history and another subject I'm still deciding on. My parents want me to go to uni, however we both know it will be a massive struggle because we won't be able to afford it without a loan and I'm sure they will support me. However, as there is almost two years to go I think it's a perfect time to start thinking about how to plan out.

I'm wondering about a few things, how the applying procedure all the way to training works and interviews and stuff. I can do with links if you can't be bothered to write it out. Also as I'm planning to join after sixth form, this means I get a long summer, would it be good if I did some physical training all through that summer then applied at the end or should I apply straight away? Finally, I'm also a little confused at what it takes to become an officer and how training differs. Is it the same physically with a lot more time taken on mental and tactical situation or what?

Thanks for any advice.

Checking out the site now. It's quite confusing though as it says what happens in training but not in detail. It'll give me a good insight however.

I know the Army offers bursaries if you go to Uni and then join up, is it worth checking if RM offer the same?

Well they don't want you to know exactly whats going to happen! I mean where's the fun in that! Its like preparing for the unkown'n.... kinda :D

Anyway yeah the army don't pay you fee's they give you one grand a year for each year you stay on in Further Education (up to 4 or 5 years) then an extra 1k when you finish training!

Go to University and get your degree.
You can contact your local AFCO and get the skinny on becoming a Royal Marine officer.
Life skills as well as history are important to POC and AIB.
Take it easy with the fitness program as your still growing, over doing it now could cost you later.

My top tip would be to do as much of your own research as possible on what a Royal Marine Officer does. If you then decide that it is what you want to do you can start looking into the specifics of how to join. It would be very easy to waste a lot of time and effort striving for something that you later find is not for you.

I don't want to piss on your chips mate but you don't really come across too many 18/19 year old officers unless they've done some pretty exceptional stuff in their life - and I'm not talking A* at GCSE's and A-levels. The sort of 19 year old who is going to come in and take over a troop of battle hardened bootnecks mid tour is going to have to be firmly squared away!

Doesn't mean you can't try though but pound to a pinch of sh*t they'll tell you to get more life experience and going to university is an ideal place for that.
