RE?

Post by Englishman88 »

I was sure that joining the infantry was for me but I have been getting very interested in the Royal Engineers and being a combat engineer.

I was just wondering what would the best trade be so I could spend more time as a combat engineer?

I'm considering the RE as i think it's a good mix of front line and not so front line if you know what i mean :-?
I'm going for armoured engineer as it gets you out there to see some action, but don't quote me on this but i think you can concentrate on the combat engineer side of things. You can also go on to do the AACC or P Coy to become a commando engineer or parachute engineer, so in the long run you get more and become part of the more elite.
I intend on doing the AACC to become a commando engineer. They also do diving so you can become a diver.
There is a large scope of trades in the RE and i think the RE are well respected amongst the army. I hope they are any way

I joined the Engineers about two years ago as an Armoured Engineer, and was told I would be able to go and do P-Company which I hoped to do. However when I got into training I was told that infact I wouldn't be able to do P-Coy or the AACC because of the trade I had choosen, and because of this including a few other reasons I left training. It might not be the same now, but just giving you the heads up mate.
Don't pull face's, it means nothing to me I can't feel a thing. You must drive forward.

Do you or anyone else know what trades you can do to do p coy and aacc?

And does anyone know if you can just specialise in combat engineer?

Cheers matey  Thats something i'll have to look into if the trade has a deciding factor on whether you can go for p coy or aacc

Just checked out the army jobs website and it appears the armoured engineer can only specialise as an army diver. A communications engineer can do the aacc, p coy, bomb disposal, diver. And it looks like the other trades in the RE that require GCSE's of some sort can all go on to do the aforementioned courses.

Unfortunately I am lacking the maths GCSE so trade choice within the RE is limited to Driver, Comms or armoured, so looking at that i may change my choice to comms engineers............. hmm, decisions decisions.

A maths GCSE takes remarkably little time to complete when it's the only subject you're studying, even if you're working full time. If you're interested in trades that require it, give your local college at call - it may be worth delaying your application slightly to improve your career prospects.

I don't know how it works in the Army, but in the Corps they have NAMET tests (well, used to, it's called something different now, which may even be tri-service) - Naval Maths and English Tests. Basically if you're not educationally qualified before entry (promotion to certain ranks requires gradually higher quals) you can take these tests to prove you're up to the same standard as the required GCSE eg. the highest is (again, was) 0-0, which equates to grade A-C in both Maths and English at GCSE. I don't know how hard it would be to re-trade in RE though.
