Catterick.

Post by jstagg »

It's not long now until me and a few other people from this site head up to Catterick and start basic there was a list made on here with various objects to take to basic (witch i've purchased) it sounds as if they will help but what I'm not to sure on is the £50, many people say they ask you to take it so you can buy essential kit from the naffi if you've forgotten something, and other people say it's just for sweets and useless stuff.

I'm 3 weeks away from going, I've got a couple grand in my bank, I'm going to keep a wad in their but and spend the rest, BUT my girlfriend (who i now live with) has brought sky HD, and we don't have a HD T.V, im 50£ off budget to buy a 50" HD TV 1080p.

So what is this £50 people aren't sure what its for at Catterick FOR?.. and it's holding me back from the biggest inches I'll ever have.

sorry mate tv will have to wait. you will definately need money for when you get there, like the above post you will need to get stuff for excercise and folders ect for best books( if they still do them). ironing board(if your not taking one with you) as there is never enough supplied in the rooms. many items that i cant actually think of at this moment will need to be bought so its always handy to have the cash.
why not go for a smaller tv? :D

I'd agree, when you start you'll need cash for bits and pieces, and it would be unnecessary grief if you got stuck without it.

Good luck, I bet you can't wait to get stuck in. 8)

Save your money, buy a 32" for 299 from Argos. After 40" in my opinion the quality gets shoddy and blocky. Just think after training you'll have even bigger wad to buy whatever.

And at the end of this year you will be going wherever your regiment is going, if its abroad it may be cheaper to buy abroad at the end of the year and more convinient.

As above, anything above 42" will have poor picture quality for any non-HD sources, including your DVDs (even if you're running them through an upscaling DVD or Blu-Ray player) and the vast majority of TV - even on Sky HD, apart from the sports channels, most programming is still in 'normal' resolution.

Pioneer and Panasonic are apparently the best for TVs, with Sony not far behind, but they're probably a little over your budget for that size (for the good ones anyhow). Samsung are nice and not overpriced.

But WHY are you buying your missus a new TV that you're not gonna see for a year?! I hope she's paying for the Sky! :o

If you have a 50" tv u have sit about 20 feet away so that picture remains good quality. I have a 40" tv picture quality is great but if i get up close then it does go pixely. Also buy a tv that has a high contrast ratio.

But getting back to thread I've heard that it's best to take your own decent iron with you and things like that, is this true????????

Dawber, you'll still get decent picture quality from a digital source, but it will pixelate - it's physically impossible to digitally create a picture that won't at that size unless you've got an HD source. DVDs for example simply cannot fit sufficient data on them.

Jstagg, before spending that amount of money on anything it's always good to research. Have a Google - sites with decent authority such as Which? are what you're after - and pop into a few shops (proper ones like Richer and Sevenoaks rather than flog-you-anything Currys-type places). Work out how big you actually need too - more inches sounds great, but can end up far too big for your room.

Room capacity isn't a problem, I've got a special HUB thing to clip on to a Bravia T.V that 'Masters' the resolution on TV's over 42'' BUt this is for use with the P.C and games ect, so i'll probably have a scout around for one but it will go under intense tests before i purchase one. lol
