Mech Vs Light Role - day to day

Post by CardSharpe »

Hi

Just wondering if anyone could give me a run down on the main differences between the day to day life of mechanised infantry and light role infantry.

My local regiment is the Royal Anglian Regiment - 1RAnglian(vikings) are mechanised and 2RAnglian(poachers) are light role, and although my its the vikings that normally recruit from my native county(Norfolk), I really think I want to do Light role more than mechanised.

I'm going to talk to someone from the Vikings later in the month, but I expect he might have a bit of a biased point of view :) I've been told that 1RAnglian were essentially light role on operations, but surely they'll be doing alot more vehicle oriented stuff than the Poachers when they're off ops?

Also, seeing as I'm not from where the Poachers normally recruit from (although I'm close), should this be much of a barrier to entry?

I've checked a few websites, but I just thought it best to ask here seeing as we have a few people who seem to be headed towards the Poachers soon. I'd just like to know a bit more before I go to the AFCO :)

Any help much appreciated.

Hi Cardshape,

Im going for 2 Royal Anglian the poachers & i can't vouch for it myself but my recruiter is also a poacher & he said hes been in the army for 16 years & hes been to 22 different countries and numerous tours of afgahnistan. 1 Royal Anglian are a mechanised infantry unit, 2 Royal Anglian are a Light Role Infantry unit & 3 Royal Anglian are a TA unit. I don't think it matters if you want to go into 2 Royal Anglian, when i first chose my 3 jobs i asked about the rifles and my recruiter said i could go for them but its just the area that we recruit from is royal anglian so i said ok ill go for that, so you will have no trouble picking 2 Royal Anglian. If you want to do more Light role then id pick 2 Royal Anglian mate, iv'e watched Ross Kemp in Afgahnistan & he is with 1 Royal Anglian ( The Vikings ) throughout a tour in afgahnistan and throughout most of it they are travelling by Viking ATV's driven by the royal marines & in intense firefights. I suggest you buy it mate, its a good watch. Apart from that i dont know much else , try looking at

http://www2.army.mod.uk/royalanglian/index.htm

If you cant find anything on there try searching OP TELIC in google that is 2 Royal Anglian & if you search OP HERRICK that is 1 Royal Anglian.

By the way have you got an ADSC date yet?
Thanks mate & good luck.

Cheers for the advice AdamB, really good stuff :)

I havent got an ADSC date just yet, I'm having to re-do my BARB test due to my original recruiting sergeant withdrawing my application because of a misunderstanding.

I've done two Parachute regiment insight courses, originally I wanted to go there but fitness is an issue for me, as is time, so I've decided that light role infantry might be just as good for me.

Fitness wise I'm at para recruit level in terms of pressups, situps and pullups, but my run time is only marginally better than the level I'd need for the infantry.

I watched the first two episodes of Ross kemp in afghanistan, looked pretty good so I'll try to see the rest of it at some point.

I'm just concerned that mechanised infantry will be doing alot more vehicle oriented stuff than the light role guys, I'll be sure to have a chat about it when I get to the afco in a few weeks, I just hope I dont get BS'd into joining the wrong thing :)
