Quick Couple of Questions

Post by lil_dinger_bell »

First and foremost gents, I am a new member to this site, but have been reading it religiously for about a year now, which reminds me to thank dearly deadhead and brows for their amazing diaries!

I was born in the U.K and moved to Canada as a kid. I still hold a British passport and have successfully received a POC and AIB for May 5th, May 10th respectively.

The Navy has mentioned that upon successful completion of both ‘interviews’ it is still a possibility that I may not receive a 'residency waiver’, therefore deeming me unable in becoming a RM Officer. Do you guys know how I can make myself more appealing for this residency waiver or does it just come down to ‘dumb-luck?’

As you can imagine I have been studying for both my POC and AIB. I recently came across someone mentioning the value of reading the ‘green bible.’ What is this bible and where can I get a hold of it?

Thank you

Welcome to the site!

The Green Bible is a booklet avaiable from any AFCO and I think it is the fitness guide the RN/RM had produced. It's a small booklet but full of info.

There's quite a few guys on here going for a Commission, including me, so there's quite a few threads on the subject. I'm not so sure about the wavier part, if your're really unsure nip into an AFCO and ask.

For a commission you'll need to go deeper than the bible mate; it's basically just a guide for people joining and contains, well, what I put in that other post! But if you phone an AFCO they should be able to post you one out.

No problem, it's why I wrote it. This site helped me a lot when I was applying for a commission and I’m glad people are finding it useful. No doubt I’ll be referring back to it when I get round to re-applying.

Can't really help you with any of your questions but if you need help with anything POC or AIB related give me a shout and I’ll be more than happy to share my experiences.

All the best and good luck eh

Thanks guys, it seems that I do have the green bible of POC fitness standards and scheduling. I’ll check some of your posts druadan, I tried to search for ‘green bible’ but was unsuccessful. I will search your user name instead.

Brows; I may have some questions for you; you pretty much answered them all in your diary but I am sure some will surface. To tell you the truth, I am more worried about the AIB than anything else, it’s the one that seems the most mysterious…and math is one of my weak suits, where endurance is my strongest.

Actually speaking of fitness Brows I have a question for you. How was your press-up progress whilst training for the POC? I have 2 months to go and I can only perform 30 to the audio beep I downloaded. I know two months is a long time for improvement but it seems I have hit a “press-up brick wall.” – any suggestions?

Again boys, thanks….eh

Change what your doing, go to the gym and start lifting heavier weights for 2 or 3 weeks (8-12 reps) then go back to endurance. Your body has adapted to your pushups and needs to shock it into working harder. Or failing use of a gym, vary your push up program.

lil_dinger,

The post I referred to above is very recent, it's in a thread on this forum entitled 'What do they ask at the interview' or similar. It's only a brief outline of what's in the bible.

I'm sure one of the lads in the recruitment process at the moment can give you the proper title and MoD number for the booklet...?!?!

As I said, that's a good place to start, but you'll need to go deeper. The lads who have done POCs and AIBs are better to look for than my posts, I'm a lowly Marine so haven't done all that

Dinger,

AIB is harder and valued more when you are examined at the final selection board. So at least you've got your priorities right.
The maths, well its maths. You get some mental arithmetic, some algebra. Just find some GCSE website (or the Canadian equivalent to a kids maths qualification when their 16) and do some of the questions on that. All I can recommend is practice practice PRACTICE!!!! Remember the 7 P's; Proper Planning and Preparation Prevents Piss Poor Performance.

Fitness wise, press ups are NOT done to a bleep on POC. Unless they've changed something since last June, the press ups are done in your own time providing you stay in the press up position.

JUST TO CONFIRM, you are doing "elbows in" press ups because if your use to wide stance then you'll be lucky if you get half your score if you haven't practice elbows in.

What really helped mine was loading up a back pack with about 10kg and then do press ups like normal with it on. After a few weeks of that and you take off the bag you find it much easier. The advanced version is using the bag AND putting your feet on something higher up (sofa maybe) Two months is plenty of time to get that a little higher.

Brows, cheers for the advice.

I am doing the press-ups properly with the elbows in, making them that much harder... but atleast my triceps have never looked better.

I will definitely try your method of adding weight to my press-ups though. I’m also going with what Druadan mentioned to hit the gym for a little. (Perhaps 1 week gym, 1 week my regular POC routine [press-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups])

In the end it will work out. Hopefully the press-ups are not to a automated beep because I would be able to hammer some more out if I get to rest for at least 10 seconds (not touching the ground of course.)

Again thanks bro

The pull-ups are done to the command of the PTI, he tells you to bend/strech your arms, theres about a 2 second delay, sometimes you have to wait at the top until one of the other two people with you catch up.

So if you're lingering at the top, and someone beside you is struggling, you have to wait until they either get up, or the PTI asks them to step down.

Thanks

Not was I was hoping for but what can you do...my much sought after and imaginative 10 second rest sounds better but I will survive with the bend stretch technique.

Cheers

Thanks for the press-up advice. I am struggling with the same problem. My body is so used to doing 37ish press-ups it doesn't want to do anymore. I will try your advice and crack some more out!

Cheers again!
