Until very recently you'd have been too old to join, so I'm not surprised that you're the only recruit of your age group at your unit.

Give it a few months, and I'm sure more older recruits will join you. Then you can think of yourself as a trendsetter!

40? well done!
I remember replying to an RMR ad in my late 30's but they couldn't even be bothered to reply. I read that the MOD is upping the age limit to make up for recruitment shortfalls, is this how you managed to wangle it?

The RMR's PR skills and relationship with the AFCO's could be improved I agree. getting up their in person is the best bet I think though.

It definately helps if you have previous military experience or are transferring from another unit.

There's a bloke in my holding troop who is about 37/38. He does have previous military experience (ex navy) but it shows there are a few. That's the oldest I know of. After that, the next oldest is 32/33 (can't remember exactly)

But Im suprised, I was allways under the impression that the reserve age limit was 28 or something.
