A quick question for ex shin splint suffer-ers.

Post by euro_andrew »

I have had shin splints for over 2 months now with a month of treatment and I was wondering how long it took for people to get over them?

MY bloody pysio keeps sending me out saying I can start running again and I just end up back in the next week needing treatment. ITs totally ruining my confidence with running and my confidence for the Marines.

alright mate,

i had shin splints for a couple of months mid last year and found that getting a decent pair of running shoes and doing proper warm downs after my running soon got rid. can i ask what trainers youre using?

The question is, what has your physio said has caused the shin splints? Moreover what has he/she suggested you do about it? One more thing, what does your weekly treatment involve?

Ok I lied, one more thing....when you go back out running after being given the "all clear", how far do you run? On what surface? And to what extent do you follow your physios reccomendations?

I have 2x pairs of pretty much brand new trainers, Asics GT2110 and Brooks S-257.

My physio said it was because my arches are flat and she sold me some insoles with more cushioning and a arch raising part to it. The treatment is once a week doing massaging and that to loosen up the calf and shins.

She said both my shin and calf are really over developed and that there is no point doing shin building excersizes. just arch ones.

The build up she gave me was:

(running on pavement which she said was ok because it will make my shins strong enough to handle it.)

I started off running 2 mins then stop for 1 min walking x 3 then the next day 5 mins running then 1 min walking x 3, then rest. then next day 10 mins and 1 walkingx 3, rest, next day I did 12 mins on 1 min off x3. on the 12 min day it flaired up and was all tight and painful today. She said today to go and have 2 days off running then start 10 min run, 1min off x 3 again.

I want to be able to start training for my PRMC 3miler in a couple weeks. What would happen if I started getting shin splints when Im carrying 100 pounds of kit and half way through a excersize in RT? would they ahve to bin you?

haha they dont bin you for shin splints unless its a reaccuring injury that wont mend. You'll either have week or so off phys or be put into hunter be you wont be bionned unless like i said its a reaccuring injury.
Don't consider failure and then it wont consider you!

Are you sure its still shin splints and hasnt progressed to the beginnings of compartment syndrome???
Go back to your doc and get checked over again.
If your shin/calf is overdeveloped it could be a possiblity.
Go and get seen sharpish.

Ok ill get it checked out tomorow.

I have always had really well developed calf and shins as I used to play rugby for 3 years back in Oz.

Beat me to it

In the mean time, stop running. Regardless of the problem it will only get worse if you continue to run with pain.

I found out from my physio it is not typical shin splints, its all over active tibialis anterior. She also said my pain is kind of like exertional c omp syndrome. Not the operative one. Exterional comp syndrome is treated.

But she doesnt think it is a compression syndrome.

IF anyone knows what that means?

Hmmm..i wonder if a doctor will try and f*** you over like whats happend to me?

Go and se a specialist at the hospital, sod the GP, they're all sh!te mate! Coming from experience, i think i've had it the worse of anyone on this entire forum. Dont be like me and think "yeah i can push though it" i've already explained you haven't i mate, i gave you the best advice, remember to stop running and just swim instead ok. If ANYONE on here tells you to carry on running and there was a an option to meet that person so i could chin em - TRUST ME I WOULD!!!

Get it looked at by the hospital ok, its the best thing you can do. DO NOT! CARRY ON RUNNING! Until you've been looked at properly and taken the best advice.

Keep me infromed buddy ok.

I agree with AJ, I had really bad shinsplints for over a year and never stopped running through it all, I could only manage 2.5km or less before struggling to walk back. Best advice that can be given is to stop running for a while.

With me, i do the exercises that i found on this website which stops the pain almost completely. Sometimes though after a run i'll be in pain but that goes after about 10 minutes (i don't feel them during the run)

Yeah this all helps fellas and there is some really good advice here

But the problem remains of long term effects. Think about it, Andy wont be able to stretch when hes out yomping with a bergen on his back, because he will have to keep up with everyone else making it extremely uncomfortable for him.

So he has to identify what the problem is and then sort it and not focus entirely on treating the symptoms.

All the best. 8)
