Was down there last week and I didn't see anything on them. I think there was a mention of them on one of the promotional videos for recruits, but nothing on display which is a shame but they do try to keep a low profile ;)

The Old SBS motto was: Not by Strengh, by Guile So take it as read the SBS up until it was fecked up by this Shite government liked to keep a low profile.

It's new motto is: By Strengh, by Guile I imagine a lot of the Owd and Bold SB blokes cringe at his desicration of a once proud units motto.

In fact why not totally merge the SAS & the SBS and have as a Motto:

Who Fecking cares who wins as long as we do!!! B'Liar and his arsewipe devotees need fecking shooting as far as I'm concerned!!!! Tradition and values means feck all to him or his hangers on! The mans an A1 CNUT!

The Imperial War Museum has a fair bit of WW2 stuff on units which were closely related to, and later (I believe) integrated into the SBS - my late grandfather's diaries of commanding a COPP unit (recce boat sections which landed on Japanese islands pre-invasion, mapped and scouted beaches) are there at the moment.

There's a good read called Stealthy By Night which is a history of those operations if you are interested in such things.

I may be wrong, but I did think the RM museum at Poole had a display on the origins of the SBS (limpet mines and all that)...very vague memories tho...just buy Cockleshell Heroes, that'll give you as much as you need to know

SBS and SAS now share 93% operational capability...ie. only 7% of what they do is 'specialist.' SAS have HALO, SBS dive. That's it.

World War 2 saw the birth of many 'special' units.

Combined Operations Pilotage Parties. COPP.
Detachment 385.
Royal Marines Boom Patrol Detachment. RMBPD.
School of Combined Operations Beach and Boat Sections. SCOBBS.
Sea Reconnaissance Unit. SRU.
Small Operations Group. SOG.
Small Raids Wing. SRW.

Just a few of the lesser known units.

The Special Boat Service was itself born in 1940 when No 8 Commando (Army) started the Special Boat Section. The first raid by the SBS being on the 22nd June 1941.
Prior to the formation of the Royal Marine Commando's, marines along with members of the Royal Navy and the RAF could be found in Commando units.

At the end of WW2 the Special Boat Service lived on in the Royal Marines, becoming known as the Royal Marines Special Boat Service.
Its strength being around 1% of the Royal Marines at that time. That is 60/70 members.

So as regards anything as a section in a museum on the SBS you would have to know what you are looking for!

I have not been to the Imperial War Museum for many a year, but I suspect you will find items as used by many of the 'special' units on display.

Before anyone visits Poole looking for the 'Royal Marines Museum', don't bother.
At one time recruit squads did visit the 'in house' collection held by the SBS.
This was not nor is a public venue.

Should you visit the Royal Marines Museum at Eastney, you will find items from the early days of the SBS.
One being the 'Sleeping Beauty', a one man motorised submersible canoe.
Being within the Royal Marines unless you know what you are looking at you would miss any connection with the SBS.

If you are lucky you may even find a member of the museum staff who may give you a more informed view of any SBS artifacts!

Two books that could be of interest;

The Frogmen of Burma.
By Lt Comdr Bruce S Wright. C.D.
SBN 7183 0481 0

The true story of the Sea Reconnaissance Unit, by the man who started it.

SBS.
The Inside Story Of The Special Boat Service.
By John Parker.
ISBN 0 7472 1976 1

Both books even have photographs!!!!!

Sorry, complete mis-post due to Alcohol, I meant the RM museum at Pompey (Eastney), not Poole. I didn't even know there was one at Poole, to be honest.

You get free entry if you're serving too...

Another good SBS bio is First into Action by Duncan Falconer. A good account of what SBS selection was like in the 70's.
