Hey Does anyone know where i can get a full details map of the route of the fan dance. I tab up pen-y-fan and around the brecon beacons regularly but aimlessly so therefore i have no goal or benchmark to set myself against. Any help would be great guys...

Does anyone know the distance covered? Is it approx. 16Km? Or am I just being a rem?

Read Much?mfat_man wrote: "The ____25km____ route of the Fan Dance starts at the base of Cefn Cyff and climbs up to the summit of Fan y Big. The route then follows around behind the peak of Cribyn, and ascends Jacob’s Ladder to the summit of Pen y Fan, the highest peak in the Brecon Beacons.
THE FAN DANCE
Hi
Just reading 'Immediate Action' by Andy McNab, and this is what he says about the fan dance:
"The Fan Dance is a 24-kilometre run with bergens, done with DS* in groups of about thirty, with no map-reading requirement. It starts at the bottom of Pen-y-Fan, goes up onto the hill, and right to the top, which is the highest point in that part of the country. Then it's back down, around another mountain called the Crib, and along the Roman road, a rubbly old track, then down to a checkpoint at a place called Torpanto. Then it's the whole lot again, in reverse."

Hope this is of use.

Believe the turnaround point the other side of the Fan (if you start at Storey arms) is the obelisk. It is 24km.
It's not a bimble, but if you've got some proper hills in your legs, then it's not too tough either, the Fan isn't terribly steep or high. Wasn't aware it was done with DS on selection though, that doubtless makes it tougher - thought it was individual effort.
& you can just do the maths utrinque - as long as you can do over 4mph over 800m hills, you're in good shape.

Followed by...
"Wasn't aware it was done with DS on selection though"
That route is laughably incorrect. Don't give duff info out to potential recruits.
If someone wants to know the route they should applyfor the course.
I would apply, but I'm really not that fussed.

Its not the Fan Dance but heres a good route.....
Drive to Brecon and then up past the industrial estate to Cwmgwydi, its an old camp under the northern foot of the Fan.
Go straight up, and then down Jacobs, up and over Cribin, then across the Roman road and up Fan y Big, around the Northern Escarpment and down to the carpark at Torpantau, back up the hill, and reverse the route.
If you are a tad mad from the carpark at Torpantau head down the hill by road to the bridge at the top end of the reservoir and then back up, will give a shake to the legs.
Im by no means ex SF but am a Brecon lad by birth and up until I joined up spent most of my time up them hills, joined to get out of the place and then spent more time up there than if I'd have stayed a civvie!
