America wants us to give back the Falkland islands

I heard in the news today, that America supports call for Britain to enter into negotiations with Argentina to give them back the Falkland Islands.
As far i as i've always known, the islands have been ours since the Brits found it uninhabited and settled there, and i don't think we ever took it them from the Argies, thepeople living there are British, they want to stay British and our troops have died proteting them.
Please anybody tell me of any info on the Argies claim to them, a bit of detail on how we came to have the islands and your thoughts on America's back stabbing!
it is just reassuring to know that the official British statement after the war in '82 was we would never give up the islands, and the government's latest response to America's plea was 'there will be no negotiations'

Well what about America giving back Porto Rico which it is still hanging onto since the the war with Spain at the end of 19th Century. It has not allowed it to become a State, they have to pay Taxes and serve in the American forces but they are not allowed a vote????

OAS backs Falklands claim

THE 33rd General Assembly of the Organisation of American States (OAS) has passed a statement of solidarity with Argentina's claim to the Falkland Islands, over which it fought and lost a war with Britain in 1982.

The statement, passed by voice vote as the OAS wrapped up its meeting today, calls on Britain and Argentina to resume negotiations over the South Atlantic archipelago as soon as possible.

The talks should have as a goal "finding a peaceful solution to this protracted controversy," the resolution said.

The islands, known to Argentinians as the Malvinas, were occupied by Britain in 1832, despite Argentine protests.

The statement of solidarity was proposed at the OAS meeting by Argentine Deputy Foreign Minister Jorge Taiana and seconded by Brazil, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia and many other delegations.

Hello, I was just lurking around the site when I saw this thread and thought I'd jump in.

Puerto Rico(not "Porto Rico") is not a colony. It is a commonwealth associated with the United States. They pay no federal taxes to Washington and they are ALLOWED to serve in the United States military not forced. From what I understand Australians are similarly allowed to serve in the British armed forces. They can become a state if they want to. Or they could vote for complete independance any time they choose. It's up to the people who live there. And, from what I understand, Puerto Rico has one of the highest voter turnouts in the world (something around 80%).

Is there a link to the story about the US allegedly urging Britain to hand over the Falkland to Argentina? Seems unlikely to me.

Bigwig, In answer to your question. It is not a general attitude of the American public. There are some extremely nice people in the States who, like ourselves, can't be held responsible for the policies of their administration.

Canada is also a member of the OAS, but until I search around I will not know how Canada voted on this issue. As I said previously, the citizens of a country can't be held responsible for the policies of their respective governments. If we disagree with our respective governments decisions, we get the chance to kick them out at the next election.

I will find out how Canada voted and if it is not to my satisfaction, I will fire off one of my shittys to those concerned.

the thing is, if they hadnt have invaded, they may have got the islands peacefully.

But, now i think it is something that just wont happen. Hundreds of lives were lost retaking the islands.

This is the states of ‘the Americas’ and not the good ‘ole U.S. of A., it's in their best interest that the Falklands stay British, where would they base all them B52’s and B2’s if the sh#t hits the fan in S. America or antarctica?

And, in the future, the U.S. should pay for the use of any aircraft carriers (oops islands) and other British ‘assets’ that it needs. I propose something along the lines of stripping the U.S. of all her assets in Britain, including real estate and property. U.S. investments in Europe to be sold off, and to make sure that Britain gets paid, one of HM ships should be dispatched to pick up the payment in U.S. gold.

The U.S. must also transfer all her scientific and technological secrets to the Britain Also, Britain should demanded leases on the islands of Guam, Hawaii, American Samoa and Puerto Rico for the setting up of British military and naval bases.

Now THAT is how you treat an ally.
