Anyone In The Navy...?

Post by Winnie »

Hey,

Im currently 6 weeks into Royal Marines training and i just cant make up my mind if its for me, or if i will stick it out.
Im just wondering if anyone here in the Navy has been in the Marines or in training at least, and can they tell me is it better in the Navy, or if not better, is it a good life? I suppose the question can go to anyone in the navy, is it actually a really good life, or does that just depend on your branch.

Anyway cheers for your help...

Winnie. :D

Yes I do think it depends what branch you're part of. For example I know that generally the morale of the OM branch ranges from low to very low. Onboard my current crate, HMS Illustrious about 60-70% of the OM(W)s and maybe 50% of the OM(C)s who have served the required 3.5 years have handed in there notice. The same can be said for the MEM branch.

For the more specialised branches like the METOC, Communication technician, Hydrographer and AEM branches etc I think things are better. I suppose the RN spends more resources on training them and so can't afford to lose many of them so it treats them with more respect and dosen't stitch them with bullshit-baffles-brains related jobs and the jobs nobody else wants to do.

If you're considering joining the RN then I would strongly advise you to avoid the OM branch.

Personally I have a huge amount of respect for the RM. The basic training is so tough that only the best and most determined get through. Whereas the RN will basically let anybody in who wants to join.

Well you've allready started in the marines. I would say switching to the RN is not worth the hassle.

RM Nod you must have wanted it very badly to have committed to it in the first place! Just take a moment to think back to what made you want it ! To Jack now you will always ask yourself "was I good enough" remove all the doubt and be positive! As Artist likes to say "PMA!!!"
It makes sense!

lol, yeh, i just dont want to do it right now at this stage of my life. Not even sure if i wanna be a marine anymore.
Im only 16, still young, so if i feel up to it, i may join up again a bit later. But i was thinking i might join the Navy and try and do an all arms commando course, or if not, like i said join up again later. I just dont want it as much as i did when i started. And cheers crouchmaster...Ill go back tomoro and give it some more thought, but i really dunno if i will stay...

And Powder Monkey, i did think of one career in the OM but you just put me off it lol, others i was looking at was Aircraft Handler or Air Engineering Mechanic....what ya think?

So it would seem. However i cant make my mind up. and its driving me crazy...stay for another 27 weeks of shit and end up doing three years of something i could possibly not want to do...or leave and join the navy and get myself a trade...set myself up better for civy street... then again i could love RM life after training...See...its too crazy... :o

Nod, just wrap mate...farking bin it and go back to civvy street spending your afternoons in tesco carpark drinking cheap lager and trying to poke yourself in the eye with your left elbow! Thinking "what if!"

or...................crack on and stay put, Im sure your head will clear and there are trades within the RM that will sort you out a future career. Or if not then transfer to something else to set you up. Dont bin yet, do it until you cant do no more and you come to that decision yourself then you know you gave all you could. Grass is always greener and all that. Try and complete what you have started and you will get what no other course can give you and thats PRIDE!

Just think of all the future trapping possibilities and being able to rip the sh**e out of pongos!!!!

You dont yet know what you want so crack on doing what your doing! I know from experience that with your head all over the place you wont settle anywhere and everything will be an ummm and an arghhh!

I wont wish you good luck......just get your thumb out of your arse and see what happens!

PS Good luck

Just think when you're breathing out the wrong orifice and hanging on your chinstrap at the end of this is the greatest achievement of your life! Something you will tell your grandchildren. nothing worth having in life is ever easy, believe me I've been there and when it's all over the euphoria is worth every second of pain and self doubt. At the end you will belong to a select group who will stand at your side through the worst situations you could ever imagine! Where are you going to get that in civvy street? As a good friend said to me just minutes ago "we're not supermen" but we do a damn fine impression of him!

WARNING WARNING WARNING

REBRANDING ALERT REBRANDING ALL!

Well, the Navies way of increasing moral within the "OM" (the noise a OM makes when thinking) is to give them all new snazy titles!!!!

OM W`s...are to become........ABLE WARFARE SPECALISTS!!!
OM C`s...are to become.........COMMUNICATION INFORMATION SPECIALISTS!!
All New joining "Weapons Engineering" Brances (Tiffs and WSM`s) will be know as Electronic Technicions(WE) I believe it will be the same for "ME"`s
For Submariners....

Sensors Submariner....AB(Warfare Specialst)(SSM)
Tactical Submariner....AB(WARFARE SPECIALIST)(TSM)
The same titles goes for the Communicators
Forendies (WSM) will be intergrated into the new ET branch with the new tiffs joining up.....So dont be fooled the job does`nt get any better! there just handing out new titles!!!!
