Looking for Irish nationals serving in British Army.

Post by HavocIRL »

I'm 18, was born in Ireland and I'm Irish. I'm looking for people who are Irish but serve in the British Army as I was thinking of joining maybe the Irish Guards or the Royal Irish Regiment and was wondering how I would go about it? Any difficulties I'd encounter and how I'd be treated back in Ireland.

Somehow I don't think you'll get too many replies to this one!

I'm from N.Ireland, why don't you just join the Irish army? Also why does It have to be an Irish Regiment? You could join any regiment in England even couldn't you/he?

The Irish army is pretty good but I'd like to do something with the training I get such as a UN mission or even just serve overseas. The Irish army does participate in UN missions but the British do more.

I'd prefer to join an Irish regiment just because it is an Irish regiment and I'd be able to relate to people in the unit.

Another thing, I'm serving in the Irish Army Reserve. Will this stop me from enlisting in the British army?

I think you will find that the Irish Armed Forces contribute loads more people to dodgy UN missions world wide than the Brits do. Its just that the brits go overseas in larger numbers to fewer missions

According to the UN, Ireland, per capita, contributes more troops to UN peace-keeping missions than any other country.

In so far as being Irish and serving in the British Army; history shows that the Irish have been doing that with honour over many, many years.

Your service with the Irish Army, provided that you have been honourably discharged should not prevent you from enlisting in the British Army.

I find the study of the British Regimental System very interesting and history records some fine and noble Irish Regiments.

Good luck in your career, be it in the Irish Army or the British Army. The choice is yours and must be carefully considered, for it is indeed a major decision to swear allegiance to a country other than your own.

Many Irish men and women have taken an oath to serve in the British Forces over the years. By and large it is no big deal, you dont automatically stop being Irish.

I understand that but I was just looking for serving members who could tell me how they went about it, difficulties encountered, what to look out for and most importantly would they have done anything differently.

Irish Guards

Hmm, it looks like that at this stage, the replys to your question have come to a screaming halt.

Here are a couple of Links that you might like to try and perhaps make contact with the Irish Guards Association in the Republic of Ireland.

http://www.army.mod.uk/ig/irish_guards_ ... /index.htm

http://www.army.mod.uk/irishguards/asso ... /index.htm

For reasons that are beyond me, the above two URL Links refer to the same Association but appear to be different Website; anyhow check them out and see if you can find a contact in the Irish Republic who could be of assistance.

Good luck.

Yes I might be paranoid but during the "6" years active service I spent in Province the guys who where born local were very reluctant to give anything away about their identity and rightly so!
